Harrogate, often referred to as ‘the poshest’ town in the UK, has been named the best staycation destination in the country, beating other popular spots including Stratford-upon-Avon and Anglesey

The trend for staycations has seen a significant rise, with more Brits opting to holiday closer to home.

Staycations can be a cheap alternative to jetting off abroad and luckily for us there are a number of beautiful spots to visit across the country. Picking where to go can be tricky, however.

Fortunately, AA experts have scoured the country for the best staycation locations that are just a drive away. Harrogate in Yorkshire, often dubbed “the poshest” town, has been crowned the UK’s ultimate staycation spot.

Just a stone’s throw from Greater Manchester, Harrogate has beaten other beloved destinations like Stratford-upon-Avon and Anglesey to claim the top position. With its expensive homes, beautiful buildings and fascinating history, Harrogate is well worth the visit.

When searching for the best staycation spots, AA experts considered various factors such as accommodation quality, local satisfaction, parking availability, petrol stations, and EV charging points to compile the “ultimate top 10 locations for the perfect staycation”, reports Birmingham Live.

Harrogate has emerged victorious with the highest ‘happiness rating’ of 7.8 out of 10 and boasts 62 different activities for tourists. Known for its elegant architecture, the famous Betty’s Cafe and Tea Rooms and HS Harlow Carr gardens, Harrogate is teeming with attractions.

Nestled amidst breathtaking natural scenery, visitors can also explore nearby wonders like the majestic Brimham Rocks. Harrogate, a town renowned in the 19th century as a sought-after retreat for those seeking the healing properties of its mineral springs, now provides an ideal mix of historical charm and modern comforts, making it a compelling destination for both tourists and locals.

A trip to Valley Gardens is also essential when in Harrogate. This beautiful park houses a variety of flowers, walking trails, and remnants of the town’s famous spa waters. The Royal Pump Room Museum is another must-see, offering a peek into Harrogate’s spa history and tracing the town’s evolution as a health resort.

Not to be outshone, Stratford-upon-Avon clinched second place with a happiness rating of 7.6, boasting more than 6,000 parking spaces and more than 60 attractions. Best known as William Shakespeare’s birthplace, it offers charming walks and historical sites such as the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

In third place was Newquay in Cornwall, which boasts 326 AA-approved accommodations, more 3,500 parking spots, and a happiness rating of 7.5. To see the full list of the best UK staycation destinations to drive to this year, visit the AA website.
