Erling Haaland’s new £500,000-a-week contract has seen the Norway forward overtake Kevin De Bruyne to become the best paid player in the Premier League. Casemiro is the third highest earner and on-loan Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling are fifth, according to a survey by French sports daily L’Equipe.

Haaland, 24, joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund for £51m in June 2022 and has gone on to score an incredible 119 goals in 137 games. He was rewarded in January with a contract extension until 2034 worth £25m not including bonuses.

Cristiano Ronaldo earned £480,000-a-week during his return to Manchester United in 2021-22.

City’s investment in Haaland will be over £300m if he sees out his contract but the long-term deal protects the club against the Norwegian leaving on a free transfer. Liverpool risk losing Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil Van Dijk and Mo Salah for nothing this summer if they do not renew their contracts.

De Bruyne had been the Premier League’s top earner for the last two seasons but L’Equipe estimates his gross monthly salary of £1.7m is now behind Haaland.

Manchester United splashed £65m on Casemiro in August 2022 and he is third in the survey on £1.5m a month – the same as Salah. Rashford, who is on-loan at Aston Villa from Old Trafford, and Raheem Sterling, on a season-long loan at Arsenal from Chelsea, each earn £1.4m a month.

All three of those could be on the move at the end of the season, with United hoping to facilitate deals for both Rashford and Casemiro, while Sterling’s long-term future at Stamford Bridge is in serious doubt.

Pep Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension in November and now earns £1.65m a month – a figure only bettered by Haaland and De Bruyne in the Premier League. Mikel Arteta is second on £1.24m a month. Atletico Madrid’s Diego Simeone remains the best paid coach in the world on a monthly gross salary of £1.8m.

Kylian Mbappe replaced his Real Madrid team-mate Vinicius Jr as the highest paid player in La Liga when the Frenchman signed a five-year contract last summer. He received a €100m (£83.64m) signing on fee and a gross salary of €32m (£26.76m).

But L’Equipe claims the France captain’s decision to leave Paris-Saint Germain was not financial as he gave up earning more with a proposed contract extension with the French champions worth a potential £209m including bonuses or he could have banked £250m signing for Saudi club Al-Hilal.

Mbappe, 26, has the chance to win his first Champions League title this season with Real Madrid facing Arsenal in next month’s quarter-finals. PSG ’s Ousmane Dembele, who scored at Anfield, is now the highest paid player in Ligue 1 on £1.24m a month.

Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane is the top earner in the Bundesliga on £1.75m a month with Vincent Kompany the best remunerated coach on £627,000 a month ahead of Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso on £355,000.

Premier League’s top earners: 1) Erling Haaland £2.15m, 2) Kevin De Bruyne £1.7m, 3) Casemiro/Mo Salah £1.5m 4) Marcus Rashford/Raheem Sterling £1.4m
