An historic town ranks as the top location in the North East on the UK’s best places to live list – and it’s no stranger to national recognition

A historic town in Northumberland has outshined some of its larger neighbours to earn a prestigious spot on a national ranking of the best places to live in the UK. Alnwick, known for its rich history, stunning architecture, and cultural significance, has been named the highest-placed North East location on the list compiled by Garrington Property Finders.

The North East is home to a wealth of picturesque towns and vibrant communities, but only two locations from the region made it into the top 100 of Garrington’s list of 1,429 destinations. Alnwick secured an impressive 34th place, significantly ahead of its nearest North East competitor, Whitley Bay, which landed at 78th. Newcastle, the next highest-ranking location in the region, placed 128th.

Alnwick’s strong performance on the list is backed by statistics that highlight its appeal to homebuyers. The average house price in the town is around £330,000, making it more affordable than Whitley Bay, where property prices are closer to £430,000. With its blend of historic charm and modern amenities, Alnwick has become a sought-after location for those looking to enjoy a high quality of life in a picturesque setting.

Alnwick is no stranger to national recognition. Last month, it was ranked among the top five best destinations for solo travellers in 2025. Additionally, its most famous landmark, Alnwick Castle, continues to draw attention as one of the most beautiful castles in the UK. The castle has been a filming location for major productions, including the Harry Potter series, where it famously hosted the flying lesson scene in The Philosopher’s Stone, and two seasons of ITV’s Downton Abbey.

Beyond the castle, Alnwick is a cultural hub with plenty to offer visitors and residents alike. The town is home to one of the most beloved bookshops in the UK, Barter Books, which boasts a unique literary atmosphere complete with open fires, a ‘secret café,’ and a vast collection of second-hand and rare books.

A short walk away, fans of the wizarding world can visit a dedicated Harry Potter store. The store opened last year to cater to the town’s many visitors inspired by its magical connections. One of the biggest draws of Alnwick is its prime location in the heart of Northumberland. The town serves as the perfect base for exploring the county’s breathtaking landscapes, from its rolling countryside to its dramatic coastline. Just a short drive away, visitors can enjoy the stunning beaches of Alnmouth, the rugged beauty of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the serene expanse of the Cheviot Hills.

For those interested in horticulture, the Alnwick Garden is another major highlight. This contemporary garden attraction features one of the world’s largest treehouses, a spectacular water cascade, and a unique poison garden filled with some of the deadliest plants known to man. Despite its historic roots, Alnwick is a thriving town with modern amenities that make it an attractive place to live. The town boasts excellent schools, independent shops, and a strong sense of community. It also has a growing food scene, with various cafés, pubs, and restaurants serving everything from traditional Northumbrian fare to international cuisine.

Alnwick’s blend of history, culture, and natural beauty makes it easy to see why it continues to receive national recognition. Whether you’re looking for a charming place to settle down or a scenic destination for a weekend getaway, this Northumberland gem truly has something for everyone.
