Prince William dropped by a community event in London this morning hosted by the NFL, where he got to grips with an American football, but royal fans couldn’t stop talking about his trendy outfit for the visit

Prince William has been back out on royal duties today – and raised eyebrows with his unusual new look.

The Prince of Wales dropped by a community event hosted by the NFL Foundation, which is supporting young people in some of the most deprived areas in the UK through flag football – a non-contact version of American football.

As he arrived at the event in London, William met with representatives from the NFL and even had a go himself at throwing an American football and taking part in some of the football-inspired games with young children. However, royal fans were more distracted by William’s outfit for the visit, which saw him pair his trademark suit and shirt with an open-neck collar and a trendy pair of crisp-white trainers.

The suit and white trainers combo has become popular in recent times, with the trendy look adding to William’s new beard, which first appeared over the summer and appears destined to stay, having not shaved it off.

And writing on X, many fans appeared to love the new trendy look with one saying: “Think he’ll be a “cool” king. Will he rock up to his coronation wearing them” while another added: “Yaay wonderful surprise.” However, as it was a sporting engagement, one fan pointed out: “What shoes did you expect him to wear?”

William’s visit to the NFL Foundation event comes as it celebrates its three-year anniversary in the UK, with community programmes across London, Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds. The NFL has been coming to London for matches since 2007, with the sport continuing to soar in popularity.

During the visit today William also met Louis Rees-Zammit, a Welsh former rugby player who now plays American football for the Jacksonville Jaguars, and Phoebe Schecter, who has represented Team GB in both Flag and Tackle football and has made history as the first British female coach in the NFL.

The engagement today also marks William’s first public appearance since he was joined by wife Kate for their first joint engagement of the year following her cancer treatment.

Last week Kate, who finished her chemotherapy treatment in the summer, joined her husband for an unannounced trip to Southport where they said a heartfelt “thank you” to the emergency workers called to the fatal Southport stabbings after meeting the children’s bereaved families.

The couple met the loved ones of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, nine – all fatally stabbed during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29 in Southport, and the children’s dance teacher.

After spending 30 minutes with each of the families, they walked the short distance to Southport Community Centre where they joined emergency responders involved in the incident to hear about their experiences.

After the visit William and Kate posted a message on social media under their own names: “We continue to stand with everyone in Southport. Meeting the community today has been a powerful reminder of the importance of supporting one another in the wake of unimaginable tragedy. You will remain in our thoughts and prayers. W & C.”
