The Conservative Party have been mocked by Russian commentators reflecting on the party’s crushing defeat to the Labour Party, with several ex-MPs openly mocked

Russian media has rejoiced at the Tories’ crushing defeat at the polls, as they mocked several of the outgoing MPs where were “consigned to the dustbin of history”.

Keir Starmer will later today enter Number 10 as the UK’s new Prime Minister after sweeping to power in a landslide win. In the early hours of this morning he said the country is waking to a “sunlight of hope” as Labour swept to victory.

However, the party’s win was seen by Russian media as a victory for the Kremlin as they enjoyed several Tory big hitters being ousted. Among those picked out for ridicule was outgoing defence secretary Grant Shapps, who lost his seat.

Vladimir Kornilov, analyst at state news outlet Russia Today, said: “This unbridled anti-Russia campaigner nearly burst into tears during the announcement of the election results. It turns out Russophobia is not the decisive factor determining the choice of the British voter.”

A commentator added: “Well, now he will have more time for his beloved Ukraine. It turns out that the unrestrained fight against Russia does not help in the elections. Good riddance”.

Kornilov also noted Reform UK leader and “ Brexit ideologue” Nigel Farage ’s arrival as an MP. He added: “Let me remind you during the campaign they tried to present him as a ‘Kremlin agent’, ‘Putin’s poodle’, ‘Russian provocateur’, “enemy of Ukraine”,. ‌

“As you can see, this does not interfere with victory. The British Tories have been consigned to the dustbin of history.”

‌The Russians believe Sir Keir Starmer’s government “will probably continue its predecessors’ course of Russophobia and escalation of the conflict in Ukraine. Pro-war fanatic Alexander Talipov, who runs Telegram channel Crimean Smersh, claimed the election defeat for the Tories came in part because of Rishi Sunak ’s support for Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky. He said in a post: “The British are not satisfied with salaries, medicine, prices, the quality of government services and support for Ukraine.”

State news agency TASS warned the new Keir Starmer government would not be warmer towards Moscow. They said: “No major changes should be expected in the country’s foreign policy. “All parties presented their electoral programs in mid-June and they featured no major differences in positions on, for example, the Ukrainian crisis or relations with Russia.”

Liza Gerson – British correspondent for Kremlin-loyal NTV, owned by Gazprom-Media – said: “It’s not that the British adore the left with their relaxed migration policy, high taxes and a wide range of genders and sexualities. It’s just that the desire to punish Sunak, his ministers and predecessors is stronger than all other arguments and feelings. Boris Johnson alone, with his shirt sticking out of his trousers, gives Britons an irresistible urge to vote Green or Purple.”

Nikolai Topornin, associate professor of the European Law Department at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said Sunak “lacked the charisma and experience to lead [Britain] on the right path with a firm hand, as Margaret Thatcher did in her time. He is more of a financier than a politician. He added: “He made absurd decisions, for example…to send refugees to Rwanda.”
