Celtic fans were left fuming after Rangers players squirted water into the home fans during the wild celebrations to the winning goal at Parkhead.
Celtic supporters were enraged as Rangers players sprayed water at them while they wildly celebrated their winning goal at Parkhead.
The Old Firm derby was a nail-biter, with Rangers initially leading 2-0 at halftime before Celtic staged a comeback to level the score.
However, Rangers substitute Hamza Igamane sealed the win for Barry Ferguson’s men with a late goal, prompting ecstatic celebrations among the visiting team and their sizeable travelling contingent.
In the chaos following the goal, ‘Gers players Vaclav Cerny and Nedim Bajrami appeared to aim water bottles at the Celtic fans, who responded with outrage.
The incident sparked a commotion, with police intervening behind the Rangers dugout. BBC Sportsound commentator Liam McLeod noted: “There has obviously been a problem in the main stand behind the Rangers dugout. There are police swarming around the dugout. The Celtic fans were furious with the reaction of the Rangers bench to that goal which may well have won the game.”
Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon, speaking on Sky Sports, said: “Rangers showed bundles of character today. Celtic weren’t functioning as well as they could have done.
“You can’t give a two-goal lead to any team, particularly your biggest rivals. Celtic get it back to 2-2 and then switch off.
“It’s a hell of a finish to win it.”
Ferguson becomes the first Rangers boss to win his first match at Celtic Park since Walter Smith in 1991.
Rangers captain James Tavernier said: “We had a really good first half and maybe sat off a bit much second half.
“Delighted to get the three points. It’s been a good week for the club. We showed resilience, we were brave on the ball and took our chances. We were clinical. With the character we’ve shown in the past few weeks, we had belief to the end and Hamza pulls off a great goal. Delighted for the boys.”
Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson added: “It was a brilliant game to watch. What an effort for Rangers to hold out at 2-2 and go on and win that game. It’s a phenomenal achievement.
“If there’s one way to win an Old Firm game then that’s the way to do it – a top corner strike by Igamane. A goal fit to win any game.
“Another notch on Barry Ferguson’s belt, you have to say. Make no mistake, he wants this job long term.”
