Have you checked your rare coin collection recently? If the answer is no, well now’s the best time as you could be sitting on an absolute fortune with a two penny worth £1,000

Searching for the next rare coin to make you rich?

It’s no secret certain pieces can be worth a lot of money. Just recently, we saw the ‘rarest’ ever coin hit headlines as it could sell for a staggering £100,000 at auction – and now it’s time to turn our attention to a two penny.

Over on TikTok, user @CoinCollectingWizard pointed out there’s a specific 2p coin which is worth an eye-watering sum – but you’ll need to look for one special detail. In a post where he can be seen using a coin machine, he said: “Searching for the rare New Pence Two Pence coin because this is what we do.

“This is a 2p coin and after the design changed from New Pence to Two Pence in 1982, a mistake was made during production of a small number of 1983 coins. These coins were actually struck with the old inscription New Pence, while it’s not known exactly how many of these error coins were struck, in 1983 2p coins were only struck for commemorative sets and not issued for circulation.”

He claimed the affected coins were issued as part of special souvenir sets which also did not enter circulation, although if these sets were broken open and spent then you could be in the chance of finding one in your change. If you’re lucky enough to find a 1983 New Pence 2p in your change, then it is worth around £1,000.”

But he urged his 209,800 followers to look out for the certain date which will earn you the big bucks. He concluded: “Remember it’s the 1983 version of the coin which was struck and this is the one you should be looking for so search those 2p machines as you never know.”

Since he shared the video, it garnered 5,000 likes and dozens of comments in the space of a week. One pointed out: “Can’t be rare, I have like three.” While another added: “I have had some, I just thought they were normal.”
