The person behind the Twitter/X John Lewis account has broken his silence after the department store giants released their eagerly awaited Christmas advert for 2024
In what has become a yearly tradition, John Lewis has released its Christmas advert – and the ‘real’ John Lewis online has spoken out.
The computer science educator bagged himself the Twitter /X handle @johnlewis before the department store was able to use it. And now, he often finds himself bombarded with comments which are supposed to be directed at the department store giants.
As this year’s annual edition of the TV advert dropped, online John offered a two-word review, saying: “Soooo Good!” He added: “One of the best JL ads in years. And trust me, I’ve seen them all!.”
Recently, he’s had fun with the mix-up and previously even shot his very own mock Christmas ad.
This year’s genuine advert is called The Gifting Hour. It is a short two-minute film that focuses on a woman’s quest for the perfect present for her younger sister. The shoot was filmed overnight in secret at the John Lewis flagship store on London’s Oxford Street. The story of the Saatchi & Saatchi advert features a heroine named Sally, who has left it to the last minute to find the right gift for her sibling.
Sally can be seen going from room to room in their childhood home, as she frantically hunts through memories of her sister in order to get inspiration for her Christmas gift, as The Verve’s hit Sonnet plays throughout. Sally then returns back to reality – and back into the department store – and reunites with her sister with the perfect present wrapped under her arm.
The two-minute offering has been met with mixed reviews online. While This Morning presenter Dermot O’Leary admitted the advert had made him cry, some online viewers weren’t as impressed. One Twitter/X user bluntly labelled it the “worst one yet” as they fumed with the production.
Another added: “It doesn’t quite have that John Lewis sparkle than past adverts have had,” while a third moaned: “The John Lewis Christmas ad is very underwhelming. I don’t get it?”
