Reddit is down for thousands as both the app and website stops working, with users reporting a ‘server error’ message appearing on their screens

Reddit has gone down for thousands of people, with a dreaded ‘server error’ message cropping up for social media users.

The chat forum site popped up on down detector in the last few minutes with desktop and mobile users stuck, unable to get on to the site.

Reddit appears to have confirmed it is having problems and has replied to people on X to say: “Yes, we are working on it.”

It added that there was a bug in a recent update and they have got a fix and are working on getting their site back up and running.

Reddit is a social community where users share funny, viral and controversial links, pictures and videos.

Famous sub-reddits include /r/AMA (“Ask Me Anything”), /r/AskReddit and /r/Showerthoughts

In the meantime, savvy users have found a workaround to get Reddit working again.

All you need to do is visit “old Reddit,” the original, no-frills version of the site. You can access it by typing old.reddit.com into the URL bar on a browser and, if you like it, you can set your Reddit preferences to revert to the original design.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Reddit has gone down for thousands of people.

Back in October it was hit with similar issues. When it went down in August, more than 150,000 users in the US suffered issues with the platform.

The majority of these people found the app unresponsive but the website was also down. There were around 30,000 reported issues in the UK at its peak.

That time, Reddit received criticism on other social media sites, including X. One X user posted: “I’m running to Twitter to see if Reddit is down for everyone else.”

Reddit tweeted: “The issue has been identified and a fix is being implemented.” It previously said there was a “degraded performance,” to which X users reacted with fury. One posted: “How come you can say ‘degraded performance’ while it’s literally been dead for over 20 minutes?”
