As England take on Denmark in their second Euro 2024 game on June 20, Three Lions fans might want to check their wardrobes for retro footy gear – because it could be worth a small fortune

As England gears up to face Denmark in their second Euro 2024 match today (June 20), Three Lions supporters might want to rummage through their wardrobes for vintage football attire, as it could fetch a tidy sum.

Research conducted by UK Debt Expert has discovered that replicas of England’s Admiral home shirt from the 1970 World Cup in Mexico can command prices up to an impressive £525.

An analysis of eBay sales – excluding signed items – revealed the most valuable international shirt is the Netherlands’ 1988 home kit, worn during their victorious European championship campaign. This shirt’s average auction price is a staggering £899.99. The second most expensive is Italy’s 1992 Lotto kit, which recently fetched over £500 and has an average sale price of £575, despite the Azzurri failing to qualify for that year’s tournament in Sweden.

Scottish fans should also have a look around – for the Tartan Army’s 1970 Umbro home shirt is worth a cool £310, even though they didn’t qualify for the World Cup that year either.

Maxine McCreadie, a personal finance guru at UK Debt Expert, shared some top tips: “As Europe becomes a buzz for another summer of football mania, there’s no better time to turn your vintage shirts into cash and score big on the nostalgia wave of games and tournaments from yesteryear.”

She continued: “As fans across the continent relive classic moments and celebrate their favourite teams, T-shirts not only hold sentimental value, but provide an opportunity to make some extra cash. Some fans may even mark history while wearing history, as both Scotland and England vie to win the tournament for the first time.

“To turn your wardrobe into a financial goal, make sure you check similar items recently sold online for an idea of how much you could be sitting on, and mention explicitly any unique aspects of the shirt, such as player signatures, special edition details, or specific historical significance. Whether you’re looking to try and make a little extra money or simply intrigued by the potential value of your old football shirts, it could be worth checking their value online.”

The list of top 10 most valuable shirts also includes some rare gems including Romania’s 1994 Adidas home kit priced at £399.99, and Spain’s vintage 1966 home shirt and Ukraine’s 2012 home shirt, each fetching a cool £399.99 on average.

Denmark’s iconic 1994 Hummel football shirt is a real collector’s item too, worth an average of £350, while Portugal’s 1999 Adidas kit and Croatia’s 1996 jersey are also hot on the collectables market, priced at £299.99 and £279.99 respectively.

UK Debt Expert offers some savvy advice for those sitting on potential goldmines: “If you’re fortunate enough to own football memorabilia, whether it’s football shirts, cards or a scarf, it could be worth getting it valued.”

They suggest: “Check similar items recently sold online for an idea of how much you could be sitting on, and make sure to mention any unique aspects of the shirt, such as player signatures, special edition details, or specific historical significance.

“If available, include any proof of authenticity, and ensure that you include clear, detailed images that help to showcase the great condition of your shirt.”
