Real Madrid came away as victors in the Champions League but Antonio Rudiger was made to wait to celebrate Joselu’s winning goal and Rio Ferdinand had to coax him away from supporters

Rio Ferdinand was forced to deny Antonio Rudiger a moment of sheer jubilation in Real Madrid’s dramatic win over Bayern Munich.

The Spanish giants were forced to come from behind at the Bernabeu after Alphonso Davies handed the visitors an advantage – the sides came into the Champions League clash with the score two-all on aggregate. Striker Joselu put Carlo Ancelotti’s side back on level terms in the 88th minute as he capitalised on Manuel Neuer’s spill however.

The drama was not to end there as the former Stoke and Newcastle forward found the net just three minutes later after Rudiger squared it to him. In trademark fashion, the German defender exploded in celebration and went dashing to the stands, bounding to scream at his supporters.

Ferdinand was in the corner where the ex-Chelsea defender went to celebrate, and while the former Manchester United star was ecstatic when the ball hit the net, he was forced to spoil the party. The TNT sport pundit was quickly left gesturing in the direction of the linesman’s flag and put a hand on Rudiger’s shoulder to direct the Real Madrid ace back onto the pitch.

Rudiger had to jog back onto the field but VAR made its presence felt to allow a second opportuntity of celebration. The goal was eventually awarded and Real Madrid’s stars came together to embrace and sprawl across the pitch.

Les Merengues boss Ancelotti was pleased with the effort his team put in to come through at the end and had praise for Joselu. The former AC Milan and Everton manager had some lofty praise for his players at full time.

“Unbelievable,” he said. “I’m really grateful to them because they worked really hard, there has been a fantastic atmosphere. They are really humble, really generous. I think it’s the best squad that I’ve ever had in my career.”

Ancelotti added: “Joselu did a fantastic job, he’s a fantastic striker. We could use the wings more to put in crosses and we did really well, we had a lot of energy at the end of the game.”
