Rio Ferdinand watched Manchester United produce a spirited performance at Liverpool, equalising late on, as he demanded the team to maintain their high standards
Rio Ferdinand insists Manchester United “set the standard” with their performance as they held Liverpool.
A pulsating contest at Anfield finished 2-2 and snapped a run of three successive defeats for Ruben Amorim’s side. Given how abject they have looked, particularly in the loss to Newcastle, the Manchester outfit looked to be a side reborn.
Lisandro Martinez gave them the lead and Amad Diallo then notched a late equaliser as the visitors gave as good as they got at the Premier League leaders.
The performance came as a surprise with many tipping them to get beaten at Anfield and Ferdinand, who was part of a title-winning machine during his time with the Red Devils, believes the showing at Anfield is the level they have to reach every week and called on the players to place demands on each other.
He said on social media: “That’s what I want to see from @ManUtd. They have shown what’s in their when they show spirit, desire, effort and some quality in possession. These players have set the standard that needs to been maintained now….the players will feel that performance and know the standard.
“Now they have to govern that changing room and put demands on each other everyday in training and every match day. There will be a satisfied (maybe some feeling could have had more) feeling on that coach home. Remember what it took to create that feeling. Keep building confidence & understanding day by day. Ps. Utd better team today.”
Bruno Fernandes echoed that sentiment as the skipper spoke out following United’s stellar performance. He, like Ferdinand, claimed that setting the standard at Liverpool means they can replicate that performance at any other venue.
“If we show this level at Liverpool, first in the Premier League, then why can’t we do this everywhere,” said Fernandes.” We have been criticised and fairly. Our position in the table says it all. We have lost too many points.
“I’m pretty upset. It frustrates me and finally I did a proper performance. We know how tough it is to play Liverpool, but we put in a real effort and played with some passion and heart. We can’t stop here. We have to bring this heart, passion and frustration to the next game.”
