Nottingham Forest made the decision to sack Nuno Espirito Santo in favour of former Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou and former star Roy Keane has shared his thoughts

Roy Keane has claimed he wasn’t surprised at Nottingham Forest’s bombshell decision to sack Nuno Espirito Santo in favour of Ange Postecoglou.

The Portuguese coach was relieved of his duties earlier this week, Forest releasing a statement late on Monday evening confirming his departure. But Forest were not without manager for long, with Ange Postecoglou arriving at the City Ground to take the reins.

And former star Keane has taken aim at the club for their decision. Speaking on ITV Sport, he said: “I am not surprised. Why should we be surprised at what happens at Nottingham Forest?

“I think we know what the owner is like there. No surprises and I’ve no sympathy for any manager either who goes to Forest.

“You are going to be under pressure with the owner there. I certainly wasn’t surprised when they moved him on. It’s tough.”

Former boss Nuno enjoyed a hugely successful spell with Forest having replaced Steve Cooper at the helm. He led the East Midlands side to a place in the Europa League last season.

But things appeared to go awry in the summer, with Nuno thought to be unsatisfied with the club’s business in the transfer market. He also claimed that his relationship with owner Evangelos Marinakis had changed.

Speaking earlier this season, he said: “I always had a very good relationship with the owner – last season we were very close and spoke on a daily basis. This season it is not so well.

“Our relationship has changed and we are not as close. Everybody at the club should be together, but this is not the reality.”

And while the decision to move Nuno on has been criticised by Keane, Marinakis has explained his thought process in replacing Postecoglou.

He said: “We are bringing a coach to the club who has a proven and consistent record of winning trophies. His experience of coaching teams at the highest level, along with his desire to build something special with us at Forest, makes him a fantastic person to help us on our journey and achieve consistently all our ambitions.

“After gaining promotion to the Premier League, then building consistently season after season to secure European football, we now must take the right step to compete with the very best and challenge for trophies.

“Ange has the credentials and the track-record to do this and we are excited he is joining us on our ambitious journey.”

Postecoglou will make his Forest managerial debut this weekend as the Midlands side travel to Arsenal for Saturday’s early kick-off.
