Warren Fentiman has never been to Royal Ascot before but he will make the journey this year after the Cheltenham Gold Cup-winning trainer booked him for My Mate Mozzie in the Copper Horse Stakes on Tuesday

An up and coming jockey says he is “buzzing” to get his first ride at Royal Ascot on a Gavin Cromwell-trained runner.

Last weekend 17-year-old Warren Fentiman enhanced his glowing reputation by timing his run to perfection on Stormy Impact at the Epsom Derby meeting.

The son of weighing-room veteran Duran Fentiman had never ridden a winner there before – and just days after the Betfred 3YO “Dash” display he will be heading to Berkshire’s showpiece meeting of the season.

Cromwell has saddled two winners, a second and a third from four runners at Royal Ascot and picked Fentiman to partner his Copper Horse Stakes participant My Mate Mozzie on Tuesday.

The nine-year-old bay, a graded performer over obstacles, finished third to Belloccio in the race last year and will be competing from what is effectively a 4lb lower mark with his young rider’s claim.

“I’m buzzing to get the opportunity,” said Fentiman, whose effort on Stormy Impact took his tally to 29 successes his short career so far.

“I only found out this morning, it was a bit of a shock. I have never been to Royal Ascot before and have only watched it on TV!

“Epsom was amazing getting a winner for my boss Richard Fahey. I am really thankful to Gavin Cromwell for letting me ride his horse.”

Only in his second season, Fentiman has had 23 winners in 2025, having been in the show ring at the age of three on his pony called The Last Mimzy.

In May, the teen ticked off his another milestone when he rode against his dad in a race for the first time around Chester.

Fentiman senior battled back to the track after breaking one of his legs in four places during a nasty moment on-course at Pontefract.

“He’s doing really well,” he said about his son’s rapid progress. “I’ve been off recently with my injury and to come back and finally ride with him is a real privilege.”

The youngest Fentiman will be hoping My Mate Mozzie is another lucky star for Cromwell, who sent out Inothewayurthinkin to dethrone champion Galopin Des Champs in this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup.

His yard, one of the best in Ireland, landed the Queen Mary with Gary Carroll-ridden filly Quick Suzy in 2021 before Snellen claimed a Chesham Stakes gold medal two years later.

Cromwell and his latest employee are matched in their enthusiasm for horse racing, always striving to improve wherever they can.

“I always wanted to be a jockey – the minute I can remember,” Fentiman previously told the Mirror.

“It’s happened quicker than I thought. From a very young age, I’ve always wanted to be champion apprentice – it would mean the world to me.

“Ever since I was two – I used to go through stalls with my little 11-hand pony on a lead rein and canter in the jockey position.

“I’m enjoying every bit of it.”
