Manchester United’s new manager Ruben Amorim has plenty of work to do in order to put his stamp on a struggling squad – but has been warned a move for Alphonso Davies isn’t worth his time
Paul Parker reckons Manchester United would be daft pursuing Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies – because his heart is set on Real Madrid.
The Canada captain, 24, is in big demand with his contract at the Bundesliga giants due to run out at the end of the season. With almost 150 appearances to his name with Munich, a glut of trophies and a reputation as one of the world’s best left-backs with his electric pace and trickery, it’s easy to see why.
Davies will be able to sign a pre-contract in January and clubs are circling with United reportedly keen to entice him to Old Trafford. But it is underwood Davies would prefer a move to Carlo Ancelotti’s Madrid rather than the Premier League.
Ex-England full-back Parker, who won two titles with the Red Devils, admitted: “I think Alphonso Davies wants to go to Real Madrid. So, I don’t think there is any point talking about him.
“Man Utd might be silly enough to involve themselves in a battle for him, but if he wants to go to Madrid, they should let him go there. I think he is just waiting for them. As a player, he would be a very good fit. But I think there is no point talking about it.”
Reports in Spain suggest the Spanish and European champions are already planning for Davies’ arrival next summer, along with the signing of Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold – who is also set to become a free agent.
But in an interview with BonusCodeBets.co.uk, he does believe new United boss Ruben Amorim could seal a deal for Viktor Gyokeres – the red-hot Sweden striker who was under Amorim for the last 18 months at Sporting CP.
Parker, 60, said: “I think it would be amazing if Man United can sign Gyokeres. In my opinion, it would be one of the best possible signings and maybe one of the best in recent times in the Premier League.”
“He knows how Amorim wants to play and vice versa. He would be the perfect addition, and also add some competition to Højlund who really needs it, because he hasn’t shown enough yet. Gyokeres would be a top striker in the Premier League.”
Gyokeres, who scored a hat-trick in the demolition of Manchester City earlier this month, was a topic often brought up with Amorim during his final weeks in Lisbon. But the departing boss took the diplomatic approach, suggesting anything he says now would only rile up the fans of his then club.
“I can’t make fun of it, right now, it was hard for me to leave, if I start joking about this Gyokeres situation I’ll get in trouble,” Amorim said on TNT Sports. “This is my city, this is my country, so I’ll respect it.
“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season, and then his life maybe is going somewhere else.”
