Ruben Amorim has already endeared himself to the Old Trafford crowd after two home wins but the Manchester United boss isn’t fond of one chant – just like Jurgen Klopp wasn’t at Liverpool
New Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has pleaded with fans NOT to sing his name, echoing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Amorim, 39, has won both of his first two home games as United manager, endearing himself to the Old Trafford faithful. The Portuguese’s name has been sung throughout matches but Amorim admits that he feels ’embarrassed’ by the chants.
“I don’t like my chant, I don’t like it,” he said ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Arsenal. “I feel a little bit, not embarrassed, but because I’m the coach, they have to chant for the players and for the club. So it’s not a good thing for me.
“I understand and really appreciate the connection with the supporters but I want them to support the team and the players because they are on the pitch and I’m outside the pitch. But I am really honoured by that, I feel a connection with the supporters but we know we need results to maintain that.”
Klopp continually urged supporters not to sing his name during games when he was in charge of Liverpool, with the first instance back in 2016 when he’d only been in charge for a few months. After Liverpool reached the Europa League final in 2016, he told Germany broadcaster Sport 1: “It’s a bit awkward. They don’t have to sing my name. It would be quite cool if they could leave it.”
Later that year following Liverpool’s first home hame of the 2016-17 season, Klopp explained: “It’s like celebrating a penalty before you have scored! I don’t play! It’s nice, I like all the players, but please don’t sing my name before the game is decided. It was the same against Arsenal. It’s nice, but it’s not necessary. It would be really nice if you could stop please!
“I wanted to say this, because (at the time) nobody could understand me. I know it doesn’t sound too smart, but sorry. That’s me. It’s very nice, thank you very much. But I’ve heard it often now!”

Klopp even directly gestured to supporters to stop singing his name when he was on the touchline but Amorim will hope that it won’t come to that. Fans will love him even more if United beat Arsenal, who are seven places above the Red Devils in second.
Amorim won’t be able to call on Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez after the duo received their fifth bookings of the season in Sunday’s 4-0 victory over Everton. Bruno Fernandes is also a doubt while Leny Yoro could make his debut after a long-term absence.
