Ruben Amorim made a damning assessment on Sunday as he claimed this was among the worst Manchester United teams in history with debate ongoing over his motivation for making such comments

Richard Keys claims Ruben Amorim is trying to get himself sacked after his latest Manchester United comments.

The Red Devils boss saw his team lose 3-1 at home to Brighton on Sunday and in the aftermath claimed that he was presiding over “maybe the worst team in the history of Manchester United”.

They are on course to eclipse their worst ever Premier League finish, which was registered last season, but Amorim’s comments created headlines and caused debate around the world of football. Amorim is not even two months into the job but has been unable to turn results around.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon boss arrived with a huge reputation but has found things tough at Old Trafford with Keys believing his latest remarks were a ploy to get those above him to put him out of his misery.

He wrote in his blog : “I still can’t fathom what Amorim was trying to achieve. We know United are bad. That’s why you’re there Ruben. It’s your job to fix it – not tell us ‘I only have one way’ and follow up by telling the world your players are s*** – the very same players you need to help you out of this mess.

“I said a couple of weeks ago I thought he was trying to get the sack. I’m even more convinced now. If I was his boss I’d call him in this morning and give him his wish.”

United’s hierarchy have already seen their judgement questioned having stuck by Erik ten Hag in the summer, handing him a new deal only to sack him months into the season. There will therefore be a desire to persevere with Amorim, even if he is working with the pieces he inherited.

The Portuguese coach achieved success at Sporting, where he won several honours with a 3-4-3 formation that he’s quickly implemented at the Red Devils. So far it is yet to result in success but the new man insists he will not change, hinting the board would have to oust him if they didn’t think it was the right plan.

Asked whether he would consider tweaks he said: “Maybe – or you continue with your idea and they have to change the coach. It is a choice everyone has to make in football.” Amorim went on to say: “I was here because of my idea and I will continue with my idea until the end.”
