Ruben Amorim picked out one player for praise after seeing his side draw 1-1 at Ipswich Town in his first game as a Premier League manager, having taken charge following Erik ten Hag’s sacking
Ruben Amorim warned Manchester United will have to “suffer” until he drills his methods into his players.
Amorim admitted that he owes a big debt of gratitude to keeper Andre Onana for a string of brilliant saves to stop him from suffering defeat in his first game in charge. But Amorim warned there will be no quick fix and it will take time to turn things around after they were held by Ipswich despite Marcus Rashford opening the scoring after just 80 seconds.
United boss Amorim said: “We are going to suffer for a long period. It’s going to take a long time. We will try to get results but we know we will have to be patient. The structure will take time. We have had just two training sessions and they did OK. We have a lot of games and the guys who do not play will train.
“We must improve the way we play. The players are trying, they are really trying. I know it’s frustrating for the fans but we will try. It’s so clear for everybody that Onana saved us two times at least. He understands very clearly and he did a great job.”
Amorim believes his players actually overthought his new tactics and instructions as they try to adapt to his new 3-4-3 system. He added: “They are thinking too much about things. It is difficult but it is also about the details. It’s hard for the players to cope with everything in three days.
“But we also know we have to improve results and that is why I was brought here in the middle of the season.
“But the atmosphere was fantastic. We are very lucky. You have the best in the world and the best league in the world.”
Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna said: “We could have won the game, we finished the first half in the ascendancy and deserved to be at least level. On another day we could have won it.
“We are taking steps forward and improving as we look for more wins.”
