Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, 54, was attacked in his home as he slept alongside his wife before being rushed to a hospital in Mumbai where he underwent surgery for stab wounds
Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan has been rushed to hospital after being stabbed multiple times in an attack at his home.
An intruder reportedly broke into his home in Mumbai, India, where the star lives with his family. The attack happened at 2:30am this morning (local time) while the 54-year-old was asleep alongside his wife and fellow Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor Khan, 44, as well as their two sons.
Local reports said neither Kareena or the two children were injured. Khan was rushed to Lilavati hospital where he has undergone surgery for his six stab wounds.
Khan reportedly suffered injuries close to his spine and neck, two of which were deep.
Mumbai Police said in a statement to news agency ANI: “An unknown person entered actor Saif Ali Khan’s residence and argued with his maid, late last night. When the actor tried to intervene and pacify the man, he attacked Saif Ali Khan and injured him. Police are investigating the matter.”
“There was an attempted burglary at Mr Saif Ali Khan’s residence,” a statement from the actor’s team said, according to The Independent. “He is currently in hospital undergoing surgery. We request the media and fans to be patient. It is a police matter. We will keep you updated on the situation.”
Dr Niraj Uttamani, COO of Lilavati Hospital, told The Hindustan Times: “Saif was attacked by an unidentified person in his house. He was brought in at 3.30am in Lilavati. He has six injuries, two of which are deeper. One of the injuries is closer to his spine. We are operating on him.”
“He is being operated upon by neurosurgeon Nitin Dange, cosmetic surgeon Leena Jain, and anaesthetist Nisha Gandhi. We will be able to tell the extent of the damage only after the surgery is done.”
In a recent statement, Saif’s team thanked doctors and fans after he came out of surgery. The statement, shared with the outlet, said: “We would like to thank Dr Niraj Uttamani, Dr Nitin Dange, Dr Leena Jain and the team at Lilavati Hospital. Thank you to all his fans and well-wishers for their prayers and thoughts during this time.”
The statement said Khan was injured in an attempted burglary where he attempted to pacify the suspect. Police are now investigating the circumstances around the burglary.
Khan is well known for playing numerous roles in highly regarded Bollywood films over the years. He earned critical acclaim for his portrayal of a manipulative businessman in 2004’s Ek Haina Thi.
The Bollywood star became recognised for playing a number of roles across many different film genres, including gritty crime thrillers to comic romance flicks. He is also known as a TV presenter in India and owns two production companies.
