Sam Fender revealed a behind-the-scenes blunder after starring in the very first episode of ITV crime drama, Vera, which left his co-star in an awkward position

Sam Fender recalls awkward mistake on ITV Vera

Sam Fender left his ITV Vera co-star requiring an urgent trip back to the make-up department.

The BRIT Award winning musician worked an as actor before finding fame with his powerful music, appearing in Vera and the CBBC drama, Wolfblood. But it was during the very first episode of Vera in 2011 which saw him make a huge blunder which left a co-star in a very awkward situation.

Sam, 30, appeared in the episode Hidden Depths as teenager Luke Armstrong, alongside the likes of Brenda Blethyn and David Leon. During the opening scenes of the episode, Vera (Blethyn) received a call and instantly rushed to a residential street in the North East to find the body of Luke. He was shirtless, submerged in the bath and surrounded by wildflowers.

Reflecting on the scene, in a now resurfaced RadioX interview which has gone viral on TikTok, Fender said: “I got killed in the first ever episode of that ITV detective programme, called Vera, set in the North East. I lasted ten seconds, I think. It stars, my mam was Gina McKee, I was 15, Gina McKee, I wake up in the middle of the night.

“I’ve got one line and I go ‘Mam’, the guy chucks the net over my neck and strangles us to death, then puts us in the bath and spreads wild flowers over us, psycho. Gina McKee comes running in, she freaks out, starts pulling us out the bath and screaming and that. The first time we did it, I went underwater, I was supposed to have my eyes underwater and hold my breath, pretend to be dead, obviously.”

Sam, famed for hits including Dead Boys and Seventeen Going Under went on to add: “The water rushed up me nose and I was choking, I was like ‘I can’t hold this’, she pulled us out the water and I just snotted all over her face, it was like ‘Gina to make up, Gina to make-up,'” before explaining that Gina and their co-stars were brilliant to work with.

The resurfacing of the clip comes after the musician found himself up for Artist of the Year and Best Alternative or Rock Act at the upcoming BRIT Awards. Following the news, he revealed on X, formerly known as Twitter that he was “super surprised” by the nominations and encouraged his fans to vote for him.

But ahead of the awards in March, Sam recently revealed to fans that his latest single, Arm’s Length, almost never made it to his upcoming third album, People Watching, which is scheduled to be released on February 21. Taking to Instagram, he said: “For a while, it wasn’t even going to be on the album… but thankfully @brookebentham joined and was like, are you mad?? It originally came from one of those magic moments where you’re just messing around, and a song literally falls out the sky. It’s about being avoidant and flighty. But also just a simple pop song, which I love.”

Reflecting on his upcoming record, Sam said: “Me and the band have picked away at these songs for the last couple of years, we recorded so much material in that time and deliberated long and hard over what came next. We settled on this collection for our next outing. Special thanks to Dean and Joe who have been with me every step of the way, they are incredible producers in their own right and I’m eternally proud and grateful for them both. The band has really evolved in this time, I’m a lucky f***er to be surrounded by such a talented bunch.”
