If you own a Galaxy S23 smartphone and have been thinking about switching to the S24 there’s a good reason to stick with what you’ve got.

The new Galaxy S24 series certainly looks tempting thanks to refreshed designs, brighter displays, improved power and longer battery life. When these devices launched back in January they were also the only Samsung phones to feature the new Galaxy AI technology. This clever upgrade has made the S24 a lot smarter than its older siblings thanks to extras like Live Translate but devices such as the Galaxy S23 are now catching up.

Samsung has confirmed the release of a major software upgrade – called One UI 6.1 – which brings Galaxy AI to many of its previously released smartphones.

That means you don’t now need to buy the S24 to get access to the very latest features.

So what’s included in One UI 6.1?

This update adds a whole raft of bonus extras to older Samsung phones including that clever Live Translate we mentioned earlier.

This is perfect for anyone who doesn’t speak the local lingo with it not only turning speech into text but also offering real-time translation when making phone calls. That means you can ring a local restaurant and book a table without needing to learn a whole new language.

Chat Assist has also been added to help users change the tone of their message to suit who they are speaking with plus Note Assist formats and generates summaries from your scibblings automatically to make things easier to read.

Want to find something much faster on the web? Samsung has that covered as well thanks to Circle to Search. All you now have to do is circle something in an image – like a handbag, travel destination or type of food – with an instant Google search taking place to reveal what or where it is.

Anyone who records interviews or spends hours in lectures is sure to love Transcript Assist which transcribes recordings or interviews into fully editable text.

Next up there’s a boost to the camera. A bonus called Generative Edit lets you easily resize, reposition, or realign objects in photos to get the ideal shot in seconds. Users can also polish up any photos faster with Edit Suggestion which does all the hard work for them and makes everything Instagram-ready in a flash.

Finally, thanks to Instant Slow-mo it’s possible to turn any video already shot into a slow-motion video – that’s not something that’s been available before as you had to film in this mode to get the effect.

If that sounds exciting, here are the full list of phones getting this upgrade from today.

The update will be available across the Galaxy S23 series, S23 FE, Z Fold5, Z Flip5 and Tab S9 series. To download it, simply head to your settings and check to see if One UI 6.1 is available.

How to download One UI 6.1

• Go to Settings > tap Software update.

• Tap Download and install.

• If new software is available, you can choose Install now, Schedule install or Later.
