Sarah Ferguson continues to live with her ex-husband Prince Andrew years after their divorce. And she recently made a surprising comment, seemingly about their living situation

It’s been nearly 30 years since Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew finalised their divorce, but they remain closer than ever.

The former couple continue to reside together at Royal Lodge, the Prince’s Grade II listed house in Windsor Great Park, and Sarah has spoken out on a number of occasions in defence of her beleaguered ex, who has been at the centre of a number of scandals over the years.

But she recently made a surprising remark regarding Andrew in an interview with The Sunday Times, in which she seemingly likened him to her father. Major Ronald Ferguson was a polo manager, initially to Prince Philip and later the then-Prince Charles. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1996 and passed away in March 2003, having suffered a fatal heart attack at the age of 71.

Reflecting on her father’s mental health struggles, Sarah said she became his “carer” after her sister Jane moved to Australia. She noted that her dad had been “profoundly sad and struggling for many years” but had not considered it “the done thing” to seek help.

“I was left to look after a sad man, which is sort of what I’m doing now,” she said, in a possible reference to her relationship with Andrew. The Duke, 64, stepped back from royal duties five years ago over his links to the sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. In an interview at the end of last year – which took place before Andrew’s links to an alleged Chinese spy were revealed but published after the event – Sarah gushed about her enduring love for the Prince.

“I was totally and utterly in love with Andrew. I would do it all over again, 100 per cent. He’s the best, a great man with a great heart, and kind,” she told the Times. “Our wedding was the best day of my life. But I gave up my anonymity that day. I was able to because love conquers all.

“It’s still with us today. I won’t let him down. He supports me as much as I support him. He’s supported me through thick and thin, not just marriage or divorce. We agree on the three Cs – communication, compromise, compassion.” Andrew and Fergie split in 1992, and divorced in 1996 after ten years of marriage.

Reflecting on their time together, Sarah told US TV host Ernie Manouse in 2010: “My deal was that I was marrying my man, who happened to be a prince and a naval officer. But what I got was not the man, I got the palace and didn’t get him… and the courtiers told me I had to go to Buckingham Palace and he had to go to sea. For our marriage, I saw him 40 days a year.”

In 2010, Sarah further stated that if they had their time again, they would stand up to those who pushed them apart. She said: “Both Andrew and I… both of us say now if we could go back we would definitely play it differently and we should have learnt how to play the chess game differently. And maybe we have still been together because we would have said ‘no’ to being separated just after our wedding .”
