Mam Tor near Castleton in the Peak District has gone viral on social media, with visitors flocking there early in the morning to see the stunning sunrise over the surrounding hills
Tourists have been flocking to a beauty spot in the Peak District, Mam Tor near Castleton, to catch a glimpse of the stunning sunrise, but their actions have been branded as “selfish”.
The site has gained popularity on social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, leading to an influx of visitors arriving early in the morning.
However, this has led to parking chaos, with the nearest car park filling up quickly and many resorting to parking along the surrounding roads, causing blockages and closures.
Local residents have voiced their concerns over cars being abandoned on both sides of the road, leading to traffic and safety issues.
This comes after the Winnats Pass, a road between Mam Tor and Castleton was closed by police for safety reasons, according to Derbyshire Live.
Derbyshire Police stated that double-parked cars had blocked the road, resulting in fines for those who parked poorly and the threat of towing for dangerously parked vehicles.
A police spokesperson warned: “If you can’t find a space where you first intended to visit then don’t simply dump your car, your selfish actions could be the difference between someone receiving life-saving care or not.”
Despite making it to Mam Tor, some visitors were left disappointed due to the large crowds. One TikToker even claimed that climbing the hill was “the worst mistake” due to the overcrowding and windy conditions.
An experienced hiker grumbled: “TikTok has made it famous and people with no hiking experience are going. Especially in this weather you need to be prepared and check the wind conditions, wear base layers, hiking shoes with grip, airbreaker. You can’t just go as if you’re going for a walk.”
Another visitor who braved the trek on a Saturday also voiced some grievances, stating: “I went, insanely busy, no respect shown by anyone, drinking, smoking weed and chaos. I would never go on a Saturday again.”
While a third chimed in: “Bro it’s such an average hill what is the hype? I see better sunrises on the way to work.”
