A shopkeeper was allegedly attacked by a young person after a theft at a major station in Scotland.

Footage filmed by a passer-by and later posted on social media appears to show a female youth in an altercation with a worker at a tourist and merchandise shop on the steps leading to Edinburgh Waverley Station last night. Some of the shop’s postcards and stock can be seen on the floor as people try and intervene to bring an end to the incident.

However, the youth appears to continue to approach the man several times before seemingly kicking out and striking him with her hand as multiple people call the police for help. The incident took place around 6pm at the busy commuter hub as shocked on-lookers watched on.

Edinburgh Live reported that a theft from the shop took place before British Transport Police officers were alerted to the altercation and called on Police Scotland to assist. A spokesperson for the force confirmed they received a report of theft and an assault at a premises within Waverley Mall and a 12-year-old youth was charged.

They added: “At 6pm on Friday 4 April, 2025 we received a report of theft and assault at a premises in Waverley Mall, Edinburgh. A 12-year-old female youth was charged in connection and will be reported to the relevant authorities.”

In 2016, a shopkeeper suffered horrific injuries after he was attacked in the head by thieves with a foot-long machete in the third armed raid on his store in a year. Tahir Ahmed was hit in the head twice by unknown assailants who used the foot-long blade to aim sickening blows.

‌Police are treating the attack as attempted murder. The attack was the third armed raid that the 54-year-old has faced at his Edinburgh shop in a year. His son Zee said Tahir would give up the business, after surviving a gunpoint robbery in 2015 and facing knives and bats during other hold-ups.
