This morning, just weeks before the 80th anniversary of VE Day, locals woke to find a flag branded with Hitler’s swastika symbol flying in their village

Police are searching for “sick and perverted” vandals who raised a Nazi flag outside a church in South Wales.

This morning, just weeks before the 80th anniversary of VE Day, locals in Ton Pentre, Rhondda woke to find a flag branded with Hitler’s swastika symbol flying in their village.

The flag had been raised on telephone lines near to St John the Baptist Church overnight. Police urgently arranged for it to be removed, and say they are looking for the perpetrator.

Local MP Chris Bryant said: “‘God knows what gets into some people’s minds. Just when we’re coming up to the 80th anniversary of VE Day this is sick and perverted.”

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “We received a report about the flag just before 7am today – contact has been made with the utility company to ensure its immediate removal.

“An investigation is now underway to identify who was responsible.”

They added: “Anybody who has information is urged to contact 101 and provide reference 2500080974.

“Or they can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”

The incident comes just a day after police in Surrey offered a £1,000 reward for anyone who helps arrest and convict vandals who carved a nazi symbol into a golf course green.

Surrey Police were called to Thames Ditton and Esher Golf Club after a swastika had been carved onto the golf course on February 15. Officers say it was suspected that an e-bike had been used to create the carving.

The general manager of the community golf club told SurreyLive at the time: “The symbol was a shock. The damage has been ongoing for a while, so it’s always a bit of trepidation when you’re out in the mornings at the moment.”
