These 50 pence coins are 20 times more valuable than normal ones, all because of a simple phrase engraved on them – so you will want to check if you have one in your possession

Coin-collecting enthusiasts need to be aware of this special 50-pence piece. But it’s not just those who have a passion for collecting coins who should be keeping an eye out for this unusual 50p piece, because the rare coin can be worth up to 20 times as much as you might expect – if it contains one specific phrase.

You might have this seemingly innocuous 50p coin tucked away in your wallet, purse, or pocket right now, and if you do, make sure you don’t spend it the next time you are out and about. The coin was released back in 2020 to mark that the UK had officially left the European Union and some of them have sold to collecting enthusiasts recently for between £10-£11.

As reported in The Sun, over 10 million of the Brexit coin were minted by the Royal Mint, with the date the UK officially withdrew from the EU marked upon them – and one special phrase, “peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations” – which the Britannia Coin Company say is a nod to Thomas Jefferson’s inaugural address.

Only 47,000 were released along with a special presentation and display box, for those seriously intentional hobbyists and collectors, and these will set you back £45.

The coins were “struck in .925 sterling silver in proof standard, giving it a higher quality finish and greater definition than the coins in your change.”

The 50p pieces also feature a portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth by Jody Clark on the head side, and if you find one in your home then you may well be able to sell it on for a really decent profit – or keep it for your own collection of rare coins, of course.

The Royal Mint releases commemorative coins to mark significant British landmark occasions. For instance, the coronation of King Charles saw them curate a commemorative collection to mark the historic occasion, including uncirculated £5 coins, silver proof coins – weighing one kilogram – gold proof sovereign milestones, and silver bullion bars that are available to buy, as well five million 50p coins entering circulation to mark the crowning of King Charles.

While the Brexit 50 pence piece might be worth an impressive twenty times its face value now, it’s only been four years since its release. If you do have one in your possession and are looking to make some extra cash, it may well be worth popping it up on eBay now and selling it to a collector. However, if you have a bit of patience – or don’t need the extra few pounds now – it may be worth holding on to it for a while yet. This is because rare coins often increase in value over time, so selling in the future could make you even more money.
