A woman visited Lone Star Rib House Penrith with her husband and son and ordered a steak, but she was left disgusted after allegedly finding live maggots in her meal
An Australian woman was left disgusted after she ordered a steak at a restaurant – and noticed something horribly wrong with it.
The diner, from the Blue Mountains in New South Wales, visited Lone Star Rib House Penrith in Jamisontown with her husband and son on November 10. The family headed out for a “nice meal” but were disappointed after the mum allegedly found live maggots in her steak.
She said she noticed something wrong “within seconds of it landing on the table” and her husband initially believed it could have been seasoning. However, after taking a closer look, he spotted the tiny insects.
The woman, who doesn’t want to be identified, said she showed the plate to a staff member who pointed out the restaurant’s high star food and health safety rating. She told ABC News that the restaurant offered her a replacement meal but she refused it as she was “grossed out” and responded: “No, I can’t eat here. I just want to leave.”
The diner added that after the plate was taken back to the kitchen, staff told her they didn’t “know how the maggots came about on the steak.” She added that the staff also claimed that the insects weren’t on the steak but on the salad.
But she said: “Either way, there should not have been maggots on the plate at all. The way I see it there are at least two, maybe three people in that restaurant handling the piece of steak … how did not one of those people notice the steak was moving?”
When contacted by other publications, the restaurant didn’t comment on the story. However, a spokesperson said an independent environmental health officer conducted an inspection the morning after the customer’s visit – and it revealed “no areas of concern.” The local council also said that at the time of the inspection, there were no flies at the restaurant and “no evidence relating to the complaint.”
A Penrith City Council spokesperson later said an investigation was currently underway into the “food safety incident” as they explained: “Council’s inspection is incorporating all aspects — from food received by the supplier, food storage at the business and food preparation. Council had previously completed a routine and unannounced inspection at the business on 5 November, which did not identify any concerns.”
However, the woman said she was still waiting for an apology – and added the experience has made her paranoid about cooking beef and has turned her off steak. She said: “We were out for a family meal, we were hungry, something really disgusting and inappropriate had happened and no one owned up to that.”
