A Cantonese tea house in Guangzhou, China has come under fire after a horrifying video emerged of a rat lurking inside a cutlery drawer discovered by a customer

China: Customer finds rat in restaurant cutlery drawer

A shocking video captures the moment a diner spotted a rat hiding inside a cutlery drawer at a restaurant.

The disgusted customer said they were looking for cutlery when they pulled out the drawer to find the rodent inside. The revolting footage was taken on Christmas Day in the Haizhu District, in the city of Guangzhou, China.

In the first few seconds of the video, a long tail could be seen as the customer slowly pulled out the drawer. The rat was recorded as it lay on top of the utensils which were available to customers. The restaurant manager of the Cantonese tea house claimed that this was the first time a rat had been sighted inside.

Local reports suggest the establishment conducts monthly disinfection procedures. An investigation has been launched, with management vowing to uncover the cause and ensure stricter hygiene measures moving forward.

Over in the UK, diners were left shocked after a man walked into a McDonald’s restaurant with his pet snake. The pet owner not only carried a reptile but also brought insects into the venue so he could feed it. The fast food chain was forced to shut the premises at The Drove Retail, Newhaven, East Sussex, for several hours. Pest control were called to site and conducted “precautionary checks”. McDonald’s confirmed the restaurant went through a deep clean before the site was allowed to re-open.

Shocked customers took to social media to discuss the incident which happened in March, last year. One person said: “Who decides ‘I’m going to take my snake out with me to a restaurant’ to feed it its own food. But then again it’s Newhaven.” Others questioned why the main had insects with him. “Pretty sure snakes don’t eat insects?”, someone else said. A fourth commented: “Snakes don’t eat insects so did the person take the snake in maccies?? Whatever went in there is not hygienic.”

McDonald’s responded to the incident and said they asked the customer to leave the premises. It is unclear why the owner wanted to feed their snake on-site. A spokesperson for McDonald’s said: “On Friday evening, we were made aware that a customer had entered our Newhaven restaurant with live insects to feed a pet snake.

“As soon as we were made aware, we closed the restaurant and asked the customer to leave. We reopened later in the evening having carried out a thorough clean of the restaurant. Pest control experts have been called to the restaurant today to carry out precautionary checks.”
