The UK is set to be battered by Storm Bert this weekend as 70mph winds and snow hit. But Brits have all flocked to social media to make the same joke about the storm

Brits have been bracing themselves for a cold snap this week as snow covers large parts of the UK.

The Met Office has issued a series of warnings for snow, ice, rain, and wind that could strike today (November 22) and persist until Sunday (November 24).

It’s also been disclosed that a storm, named Bert, is due to roll in on Saturday, bringing in in freezing temperatures and snow over the weekend. Wind gusts of up to 70mph are forecasted, along with heavy rain in some areas, raising the possibility of flooding and travel disruption.

However, rather than fretting about their heating bills and the impending icy temperatures, many Brits can’t resist finding humour in Storm Bert’s name. Numerous people confessed they couldn’t stop picturing Muppet character Bert from Sesame Street every time they hear the storm’s name.

For those unfamiliar, the golden yellow Muppet is one of the most iconic characters from Sesame Street, recognised for his tuft of black hair, orange nose and striped attire. Bert and his roommate Ernie form a comedic duo that is central to the show, with Bert playing the world-weary role, while Ernie is the mischief-maker.

One individual posted a gif of Bert’s character on X, captioning it: “If #StormBert isn’t followed in three storms time by Storm Ernie, I’m writing a letter.” Someone responded: “Storm Cookie Monster, Storm Doctor Teeth, then Storm Ernie.”

Another social media user couldn’t resist a bit of fun, posting: “Apologies all, but I had to do it,” alongside a comical image of Bert stuck inside the Met Office’s weather map. Amused online pals chimed in with comments like: “Wish he was doing the forecast,” and “We need laughter in all the gloom – well done whoever you are.”

Another fan added their creative flair, saying: “An actual visual representation of Storm Bert in Ireland this weekend,” as they showcased a cartoon Bert braving the harsh weather armed only with his windswept hair and a failing umbrella.

While Storm Bert is expected to throw a wintry blanket across much of the UK, Scotland is bracing itself for a particularly rough ride. An amber warning for snow and ice is set for Saturday with regions such as Aberdeenshire, Argyll and Bute, Highland, Stirling, Perth and Kinross, and Angus on high alert. Snow could pile up to 40cm on higher ground, the Met Office reports.
