A new study has revealed what country is the best place for Brits to uproot their lives to – the research found that this stunning European country is the perfect location
Brits across the country have been longing to settle abroad where idyllic beaches and a warm climate is apart of their everyday lives – and now the perfect country for expats has been revealed.
According to research by William Russell, there are several components which will help decide what location is the best place for British expats to move to. These include; childcare, university, rental costs and parental leave. The study explored all of these features and discovered that the most ideal place in the world for families in the UK to move to is just a quick flight away.
William Cooper, marketing director at William Russell, revealed that Portugal is at the top of the list, followed closely by Sweden. He said: “Moving abroad with your family can be a stressful process, with many unknown factors at play. What we’ve seen from this study is that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to the question of which country is best for this move, but some countries do perform significantly better than others overall.” Below are the top places to re-locate to in order.
Portugal
Portugal is officially the best place in the world to relocate as a family. Childcare generally costs just five per cent of the average household income and the cost of monthly essentials came to less than £100. While rent is more affordable than in the UK, prices are rising in Portugal’s major cities.
Sweden
Sweden just missed out on the top spot. The country has a generous parental leave scheme and it’s considered to be a safe place to live. Children that grow up in Sweden also have easy access to nature.
Italy
Italy was one of the world’s best destinations to raise a child. The country has 19 top-rated universities and affordable childcare. Expats will also have easy access to the beach, mountains and culture.
Spain
One of the UK’s leading destinations for expats, Spain isn’t just a good choice for retirees. The Mediterranean country has reasonably cheap rent and 15 top-rated universities. Spanish is also a widely spoken language so could come in very useful for your children’s future careers.
Finland
Finland is one of Europe’s best places to raise a child and as it’s the home of Father Christmas, what more could you want? While the cost of rent can be high in Finland, parental leave is very generous compared to the allowance in the UK.
Latvia
Another Baltic country, Latvia just missed out on a top five spot. The Eastern European country has affordable rent and childcare and it’s generally considered a safe place to raise a child. Latvia is in joint place with Hungary.
Hungary
Hungary isn’t top of the list for British expats but it could be a fantastic place to raise a family. The Eastern European country has much cheaper rent than the UK and childcare costs just five per cent of the average income.
Japan
One of the few destinations outside of Europe to make the list, Japan is one of the world’s best places to raise a family. The country has 11 top-rated universities and good childcare, although it will cost expats a lot to visit family back home. Japan is in joint place with France.
France
Just a short hop from the UK, expats who move to France will easily be able to visit family back home. While it’s not much cheaper than the UK, France’s childcare costs around nine per cent of an average household’s income.
Estonia
Estonia is an attractive destination for expats working in the tech industry and has been the birthplace of several unicorn companies, including Wise and Skype. It’s also a fantastic place to raise a family with cheaper rent than the UK and affordable childcare.
Greece
Greece was the 10th best place to live for expat families. Rent was pretty low in the beautiful country and expats will generally have easy access to Greece’s gorgeous islands for outdoor activities and mini-breaks.
