A stylist and regular flier has shared her go-to outfit for long-haul flights, as she claims it makes sitting down for hours on end ‘so comfortable’ and eliminates swelling

Staying snug on a long-haul flight can be a challenge, but your choice of attire could significantly improve your comfort.

Despite being the quickest way to globe-trot, aeroplanes aren’t exactly the epitome of comfort. You often find yourself squished in a tight seat for hours with no space to stretch your legs or prevent your backside from numbing, and the only passengers who enjoy any real comfort are those who fork out for expensive first-class seats.

However, one stylist and regular traveller has revealed a tip to ensure you’re always as cosy as possible on a flight, regardless of its duration. Erika Dwyer suggests that it all boils down to your outfit – and she has a different ensemble for each type of flight.

For short flights lasting up to four hours, Erika controversially stated that donning jeans is perfectly acceptable. While many would argue that wearing jeans on any flight is a crime, the stylist maintained that on a brief flight, jeans enable you to disembark the plane and continue your day in a “proper outfit”.

For slightly lengthier flights between four and eight hours, Erika advised prioritising comfort a bit more than on shorter trips. She chose trousers made of “sweatpant material” but were loose and pleated for a “smart” appearance, and teamed them with a relaxed jumper and trainers.

And for any flight longer than eight hours, the stylist would recommend “tight” yet “stretchy” clothes like leggings to aid circulation and prevent swelling.

She explained: “I don’t know the exact science behind it but it has to do with your circulation. There’s a reason why people wear compression socks for long flights, and the same theory applies with just wearing tight [and stretchy] clothes. If you are wearing super baggy clothes or sandals, you may swell, and I personally don’t want that to happen.”

Erika also mentioned she chooses outfits that are “just as comfortable as loungewear” but provide some “little bit of compression”. To complete her travel look, she adds an oversized hoody with a hood big enough to “fit your whole head”.

Her advice was met with gratitude from followers, with several expressing their intention to adopt her suggestions for their upcoming travels. Some commenters even realised they’ve been dressing similarly for flights without being aware of it.

One follower commented: “Yeah, I’m going comfy.” Another remarked: “I’ve flown so much I’ve been doing exactly this subconsciously without thinking about it.”

A third traveller endorsed the idea, saying: “Compression socks were the best decision I made for my 15.5-hour flight to Melbourne!”
