A police dispatcher accidentally announced Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s engagement to all of her colleagues – after a hot microphone error.

Julia Jordan was unaware she was still live when she said: “Taylor Swift is engaged” in the control centre. She had just read online about Swift and Kelce’s huge news and forgot her mic was on when she reacted with excitement yesterday.

But her co-workers across Lansing, Michigan, enjoyed the light relief, with one branding it the “best hot mic ever”. An officer replied: “You had an open mic there,” and then deadpanned: “That’s great news about Taylor Swift”. Julia herself burst out laughing, responding: “Dispatch. I’m clear. Yeah. Aren’t you happy about Taylor Swift?”

Speaking after the gaffe, Julia said: “We do a hard job, lots of dark things, so it’s kind of nice to be able to laugh a little.” She did, though, admit she has been teased by her colleagues.

Playing along with the scanner mishap, one asked Julia: “Well, give us some more gossip, at least.” So, as the cheeky conversation continued, Julia added: “It’s a big ring.” Another officer chimed, declaring the error the “best hot mic ever” as the co-workers enjoyed a comedic moment.

Julia believes she and her colleagues will now watch the wedding together, having gathered to enjoy Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s nuptials in 2018.

Swift and Kelce’s courtship has thrilled and fascinated millions around the world. They have got engaged just two years into their relationship but, after she said “yes”, Swift, 35, was “flying around… having so much fun,” her partner said. The couple confirmed their engagement in a joint Instagram post showing the Kansas City Chiefs tight end proposing. The announcement showed the pair embracing in a garden and read: “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”

Now bookmakers are taking bets on when and where the celebrity couple will wed. Swifties, the pop star’s enormous and ardent fan base, can even wager on the flavor of the wedding cake.

And, while most of their fans read the Instagram post, others found out in peculiar ways, like Julia’s colleagues. Kansas City-based tax preparer H&R Block sent out a light-hearted email to staff, telling them they could head home early to check social media feeds and debate potential wedding playlists.

Amid the joyful chaos nationwide, the tax firm’s email yesterday read: “Celebrate love. Speculate about the dress. Argue whether the reception will be held in KC or a castle in Europe.”
