Two boys aged 16 and 17 have tragically died following a police chase where their car hit a tree in Handsworth, West Midlands, and three other teenagers also in the vehicle were taken to hospital

Two teenagers have died following a police chase which ended with their car hitting a tree.

West Midlands Police stated that two boys, aged 16 and 17, who were in the car which refused to stop have died while three other teenagers are in hospital. The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene when the car hit a tree in Grove Lane, Handsworth, and nothing could be done by emergency services to save him.

Now, tragically, it has been confirmed that the 16-year-old boy also died in the incident, just after 2am on Thursday (December 19). Three other teenagers who were also in the car have been taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for injuries that are not thought to be life-threatening, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

West Midlands Police told how the car did not stop for police ahead of the collision in the early hours of the morning. The force is also appealing to the public for information who was in the area at the time have been told to get in touch. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has also launched an investigation.

The statement from the police read: “A second teenager has sadly died following a collision in Handsworth in the early hours of this morning. The 16-year-old boy was in a car which failed to stop for police before hitting a tree in Grove Lane just after 2am.

“A 17-year-old boy was also pronounced dead at the scene after sadly, nothing could be done to save him. Three other teenagers who were also in the car have been taken to hospital.

“We remain at the scene as investigations continue. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has begun an investigation as is normal procedure.” Anyone who was in the area at the time of the collision can contact us via 101 or Live Chat quoting log number 183 of 19 December.
