Tenerife is one of the Canary Islands struggling from the impacts of overtourism, but a major hotel group has committed investment to one region where tourism isn’t so fractious

Tenerife’s underappreciated north coast is preparing for an influx of visitors as a huge hotel chain is making its debut on the island. Puerto de la Cruz is believed to be one of the first places in the world to begin attracting tourists from across the globe, welcoming international holidaymakers as early as the late 18th century.

Today, it’s an acclaimed destination that offers a more laid-back and chilled experience compared to Tenerife’s party-mad regions like Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos in the south. Here, you can really soak up the history and culture – visiting stunning sights like the 1697 church Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia, admiring local architecture as you stroll through the old town, or spending the day at Lago Martianez, a large open-air seawater pool complex.

Now, Radisson Hotel Group (RHG), which owns global hotel chains including Radisson Blu and Park Inn by Radisson, is redeveloping a four-star hotel in the area, which is slated to open towards the end of the year. Radisson Resort & Residences Tenerife will be the chain’s first hotel on the island, and follows its presence on other Canary Islands including Lanzarote and Gran Canaria. While this signals growth and investment in the area, there’s no ignoring that Tenerife is one of the many Spanish islands and regions suffering from overtourism. But, it is reported by Canarian Weekly that Raddison has picked this particular part of the island which is somewhat underappreciated by tourism, as opposed to its more vibrant and well-known towns.

RHG says its new accommodation will offer ‘breathtaking panoramic views’ from a secluded hilltop location and is ‘conveniently’ situated close to some of the island’s best attractions, including Loro Parque, Teide National Park, and Playa Jardín. You’ll have to drive over an hour to get to the famous Siam Park, but if its stellar reviews are anything to go by – it’ll be worth the trek.

“[The hotel’s] strategic location also provides an excellent gateway to explore the stunning northern riviera of Tenerife,” RHG said in a statement. “Travelers can immerse themselves in the charm of colonial La Orotava and its picturesque valley, discover the historic towns of Icod de los Vinos and Garachico, or venture into the unspoiled beauty of the Anaga Rural Park—all while enjoying proximity to renowned landmarks like Loro Parque and Teide National Park. “

The hotel will feature 242 units, consisting of a mix of hotel rooms and apartments, many of which will boast private balconies and terraces. There will also be two ‘thoughtfully designed’ restaurants and a pool bar, along with a ballroom for conferences, weddings, and celebrations – and a wellness area. Located just 25 minutes from Los Rodeos Airport, and one hour from Reina Sofia Airport, the hotel is conveniently situated for Brits landing in either hub.

“We are very excited and committed to this second hotel project in alliance with RHG, in this case bringing the Radisson brand to a leading international tourist destination such as Tenerife for the first time,” Franciso Fernádez, Managing Partner and CEO at Canarian Hospitality said in a statement. “Our previous experience with RHG at our Radisson Blu hotel in Lanzarote has shown us the ability of the RHG brands to attract solid, high value demand from the strategic markets we are interested in and that the joint cooperation between the brand strength and distribution capabilities of an international brand and the experience and operational efficiency of a local operator is a formula for success.”
