Kevin Bradburn, 37, stormed into his ex’s house and beat his stepbrother senseless before leaving one child so terrified that they ended up jumping out of a window

A jealous ex who had a violent outburst after storming into his fomer lover’s home left one of her children so terrified that they jumped out of a window.

Kevin Bradburn, 37, arrived at the address at 3am to find his step brother babysitting and beat him senseless before hitting a child twice. He then woke another child and demanded to know where her mum was, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports.

Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard how Bradburn slapped the schoolgirl and launched a brutal attack on his step brother, who was struck on the head six times with a wine bottle and left needing hospital treatment. Bradburn, who was in a relationship with the woman for two years until January 2023, has been jailed for two and a half years.

Prosecutor Jamie Scott told how the woman had asked Bradburn’s step brother to babysit while she went out on February 15 this year. He agreed and slept on the sofa, but at 3am one of the woman’s children was slapped awake by Bradburn who asked her “where is your mum?” Mr Scott said: “The child said she thought her mum was out. He slapped her again, telling her to ring her mum. The child said her phone was not charged. He left and returned with a younger child and told the older child to phone her mum. She did. He took the phone and began to shout. She disconnected the call. He punched drawers in the caravan and the damage was estimated at £50.”

The court heard how Bradburn began shouting threats, including that he was going to kill the woman and cut her into a million pieces, and that her children would be left without a mum. He also attacked his step brother, who was sleeping in the living room and repeatedly asked “why are you at my ex’s house?” before threatening to kill him too.

The victim suffered a wound to his forehead and bruising, swelling to his lip, wrist and forearms and swelling to his ribs. Mr Scott added that Bradburn “had 60 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, against the legal limit of 35. He did not have insurance or a licence to drive. He was abusive and refused to calm down. He struck an officer to the ribs. He continued to be aggressive in custody. He kicked an officer to her right shin and left knee.”

Bradburn, of Tintagel Place, Berryhill, pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm, two charges of assaulting an emergency worker, criminal damage, affray, drink-driving, driving without a licence and driving without insurance. Kelly Cyples, mitigating, said Bradburn had lost the friendship of his step brother and that his partner is due to give birth in July. Miss Cyples said: “He acknowledges he needs to grow up. He acknowledges that he was extremely stupid. It stemmed from jealousy and alcohol.”

She continued: “He is ashamed of his behaviour. He does not recognise himself in the footage. His partner is struggling financially with a business she is struggling to manage alone. I ask you to impose the shortest sentence possible to allow him to return to support his family as soon as possible.”

Recorder Robert Smith banned Bradburn from driving for 51 months and made him the subject of five-year long restraining orders preventing him from contacting his victims, or visiting the address. Recorder Smith said: “The children were utterly petrified by what you did. At one point one was so scared she jumped out of a bedroom window to try and get away from you.”

“In my judgement the offences stem from your inability to accept the relationship was over, your jealousy arising from the breakdown of that relationship. You beat your step brother senseless in an unprovoked attack. You behaved like a drunken, violent thug. You are an unpredictable and violent man when you have been drinking alcohol. You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself. Your behaviour was totally repulsive.”
