The iconic meal deal just got a huge upgrade, after a Tesco employee confirmed a major change that has already been implemented in stores across the UK
Tesco is “winning” when it comes to the trusty old meal deal, after confirming a huge new upgrade. Whether you’re happy with a ham and cheese sarnie, packet of crisps, and can of Coke – or prefer a more healthy combo of salad, a fancy protein bar and bottle of sparkling water – there’s nothing more convenient than a meal deal.
But with plunging temperatures and more threats of snow, Brits across the nation are craving something a little more hearty and warming – which is why the supermarket has added a new offering to it lunch deals during the winter months. Tesco employee Nathan Lorenzo, who has amassed a whopping 217,000 followers for documenting his time working for the retailer, recently revealed the news – branding it an ‘absolute game-changer’.
“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Tesco are now doing… wait for it… soup in the meal deal,” Nathan announced in a now-viral video. “So you heard that, right? And I think this is absolute genius from Tesco because it’s absolutely freezing in the UK right now and what you do when you’re cold, you have soup or something hot. So I got myself a little tomato soup darling to warm me up.”
The retailer has added the 280g tub of Covent Garden Soup to its meal deal – and it’s available as a ‘snack’ and not ‘main’, meaning you can still grab your beloved tuna baguette as well. Shoppers can select the ready-to-be-warmed item, along with a drink and Tesco or Branded sandwich, wrap or roll for £4, or just £3.60 for those with a Clubcard. You can upgrade to a Tesco Finest main for £5.50, or £5 with a Clubcard.
Hundreds of impressed viewers flocked to the comments section to hail the announcement, with many vowing to head to Tesco to buy a lunch deal for themselves. “The fact the soup counts as a snack is impeccable work,” one person raved. Another agreed, hailing: “AS A SNACK? Tesco is treating us in 2025.” A third added: “Tesco are winning in meal deals,” while a fourth enthusiastically penned: “Soup as a snack is incredible. They better not put up the price anymore though.”
Others moaned that such an item doesn’t hold the same level convenience as a packet of crisps or a chocolate bar, with one person asking: “how are we going to eat the soup from the meal deal on the go?” However, many replied arguing that the meal deal is catered more for those who have access to a microwave, such as people working in the office or work canteens.
