Just like with Christmas, supermarkets will change their opening hours for the New Year however, at Tesco stores will not close like on Christmas Day

New Year’s Day is typically a Bank Holiday – however, unlike in the past, the majority of UK shops and businesses now remain open.

Just like with Christmas, supermarkets will change their opening hours for the New Year. In the lead up to the New Year, from Friday, December 27, to Monday, December 30, Tesco’s opening hours will be as normal.

These hours can vary, however, they should open between 6 a.m. and 7 a.m. and close as late as midnight—hours are very similar for Tesco’s convenience stores, too. New Year falls on a Tuesday this year and the majority of Tesco stores will be closing their doors a little earlier to allow staff the evening to celebrate.

The larger Tesco stores will be opening as normal at between 5am and 7am and will be closing between 6pm and 8pm. However, Tesco’s convenience stores will be open much later with smaller sites opening at 6am and closing at 10pm on New Year’s Eve.

Unlike other supermarkets such as Aldi and Lidl, Tesco will be opening stores on New Year’s Day, which is good news for those who may need to run out and pick up a little bit of breakfast. Although, they will be opening later than usual. On New Year’s Day, Tesco’s larger stores will be opening at 9am and closing their doors at 6pm. Again, Tesco’s smaller stores will also be opening with longer hours with sites set to open a little later at 8am but close between 10pm and 11pm.

You can check your local Tesco opening times by using its online store locator tool. You will need to enter your postcode to find your closest store.

Tesco also offers its same-day delivery service Whoosh. According to Tesco’s website, Whoosh will be operating as normal from December 27 until Decemebr 30. However on New Year’s Eve and Day services will be reduced. Normal services will be back from January 2, 2025.
