The Piano sees Claudia Winkleman, Mika, and Lang Lang search far and wide for the country’s best amateur pianists – who have a chance to play at Royal Albert Hall
An amateur pianist on The Piano pulled at heartstrings while playing a beautiful song he composed while his mum was going through ‘an awful time’.
Episode two of the Channel 4 programme sees Claudia Winkleman, Mika and Lang Lang search for incredibly talented amateur pianists at Cardiff Central Station. The episode sees the stars in awe over triplets, a man paying tribute to his mum and a man on a piano bike singing about conkers.
In an exclusive teaser clip shared with The Mirror, a man named Gavin impressed passersby at the station as he played the hypnotizing song he composed when his mum was diagnosed with cancer. Despite the meaning behind the song, he revealed the song brings him happy memories.
Gavin, from Cardiff, said: “I wrote that song when my mum was going through an awful time in her life. Found out she had cancer in January 2017. They gave her nine months to live. My mum was offered chemo and she decided she didn’t want to do it. She said, ‘Do you know what we’re doing to do? We’re just going to live it out’.”
The pianist continued: “So we lived it out. I’ve done my seven days a week, I got that part of my life out of the way. So I took nine months off work. Every day we got together, I would take her to different places. I took her to the back of my jetski and we had a great time.”
Mika was in awe over his talent and said: “This giant of a man shows up and he looks so tough and he’s just pouring his heart out on the piano in the middle of the station with something that sounds like it was composed in Havana. Listen to that melody.”
Thinking of his song, Gavin said: “Now when I revisit that song it only brings back happy memories, and it makes me smile.” The beloved Traitors and Strictly presenter Claudia hosts the new series of Channel 4‘s music competition The Piano, in which she, Mika and Láng Lang set off to find the best amateur piano player in the country.
The winner will have the amazing opportunity to play at the Royal Festival Hall.
