The spa town is home to some stunning buildings and landscapes that look even more magical when covered in snow

Christmas is often associated with snow — it’s a common theme in festive songs, films and Christmas cards despite the fact that most of us in the UK never actually see a white Christmas.

But there’s one that regularly experiences snowfall, even witnessing a freak snow storm one summer. Buxton, on the edge of the Peak District, typically enjoys several snowy days each winter.

Perched at an altitude of 1,000 to 1,100 feet above sea level, Buxton holds the title for the highest market town in England. Its lofty position means it has a slightly cooler climate than the surrounding areas, making a dusting of snow more likely during the winter months.

However, snow can sometimes make an appearance at unexpected times. Back in 1975, Buxton was hit by a freak snowstorm, which even halted a cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire.

And Buxton is especially picturesque when blanketed in snow during winter, offering views that could give any Christmas card a run for its money. The spa town boasts stunning architecture, including the Crescent, a Grade I-listed Georgian Building, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Constructed by the fifth Duke of Devonshire with the aim of transforming Buxton into a chic spa town, it was shut down in 1992. After undergoing an extensive refurbishment, it now houses the opulent 5-star Buxton Crescent Hotel. Another striking feature of the town’s skyline is the Devonshire Dome, once the world’s largest unsupported dome and currently part of the University of Derby.

The Buxton Opera House and the adjacent Pavilion Gardens are equally breathtaking, whether blanketed in snow or not. The beautifully landscaped park boasts well-kept lawns, charming bridges, and a bandstand.

The town is also home to a number of snug pubs, bars, and restaurants where you can retreat to warm up after a brisk winter walk. No.6 The Square Tearooms is particularly charming and a perfect spot for tea and cake. If you’re in the mood for something more filling, The Old Sun Inn offers a cosy setting for a hearty pub meal.
