What makes a house a home? According to new research for the younger generation, it’s all about more modern appliances

A new study has revealed that younger generations are redefining which appliances take pride of place in their daily routines, with Gen Z leading the way in embracing modern conveniences as necessities rather than luxuries.

Gen Z are more likely to consider coffee machines, hair tongs, and air fryers as essential household items compared to older generations, according to a new study.

The research, which surveyed 2,000 adults, found that 41% of Gen Z participants considered coffee machines a luxury, in contrast to 64% of Boomers and Gen X.

Similarly, only 30% of Gen Z saw hair tongs as non-essential, compared to 55% of Boomers, while just 33% of the younger generation thought air fryers were a necessity, against 47% of their older counterparts.

Despite these generational differences, Britain’s love for hot drinks remains strong with half of all adults naming the kettle as the first appliance they use each morning. Moreover, the kettle is a firm favourite among Boomers, with seven in 10 turning it on first thing.

The study, commissioned by the Association of Manufacturers of Domestic Appliances (AMDEA) for Register My Appliance Week, highlights the changing attitudes towards household gadgets across generations.

“We are clearly a nation of appliance lovers,” said AMDEA CEO Paul Hide. “Younger generations are particularly excited about the future of smart tech and the assistance it can provide.”

However, Hide also raised concerns about appliance safety, warning that millions of devices remain unregistered. “An estimated 40 million large appliances are unregistered, which means they are untraceable if a safety repair is needed,” he explained.

When it comes to must-have home gadgets, the humble washing machine has been crowned king, with a whopping 62% of Brits across all age groups saying they simply couldn’t do without it.

Eco-conscious shopping is all the rage, as a hefty 80% of adults reckon energy efficiency is the most important thing to consider when buying appliances, and 65% give the green light only after checking out an item’s environmental credibility.
