I found the first shampoo that didn’t just cover up bad smells but actually got rid of them, and it left her coat so softy and shiny she got compliments from everyone we know
Any dog owner knows that once your pet’s coat starts to smell, it can be a nightmare to get it fresh again. Whether they’ve rolled in something gross or got caught in the rain and now have that classic wet dog smell, getting bath time on the cards is a must.
Whilst most dog shampoos simply mask the smell with a new scent – which inevitably wears off after a day or two – I managed to track down one that not only cleans their coat, but actually deodorises and neutralises smells too. As soon as I put Earth Rated’s 3-in-1 Soothing Dog Shampoo, £9.78, to the test, I knew I’d found what I was looking for.

The 3-in-1 Soothing Dog Shampoo comes in three different formulas; curly coat, double coat and short coat, so you can pick the one that best suits your pet’s fur. I opted for the short coat one for my pug, Penelope, as although she has a double coat, it’s quite fine and short and the short coat one also helps reduce shedding – definitely a bonus.
Earth Rated’s dog shampoo is not only hypoallergenic, making it a great pick if your dog has sensitive skin, but it also acts as three different products in one, keeping their coat healthy and shiny. The 3-in-1 Soothing Dog Shampoo cleanses, conditions and deodorises in one step, saving you time and limiting the amount of time your pup has to spend being bathed, which is a god send for dogs who are less than thrilled about getting cleaned off.
I decided to put it to the test after Penelope had rolled in something gross, before running through the long west grass, giving her a double whammy of unpleasant smells on her coat. The first thing I noticed about the Soothing Dog Shampoo was that it has a precision nozzle, which lets you really get it in amongst the hairs rather than just on top, making sure it actually reaches her skin too.
It also smelt lovely with no chemical or artificial smelling scents at all. Instead it contains white tea and basil which help neutralise any scents and left Penelope smelling so fresh that my partner immediately noticed it. The 3-in-1 Soothing Dog Shampoo is also oatmeal based and infused with vitamin E, which help smooth, hydrate and soothe coats and skin.
Although her bath was almost a week ago, family and friends have still mentioned that she smells lovely, and there’s been no returning odours or underlying scents. I also found a little really went a long way, and it lathered up really nicely which a lot of dog shampoos tend not to do, and her coat was definitely much softer and smoother.
Amazon shoppers also seem to agree, giving it a 4.6 star rating. One said: “This is lovely. Super soft dogs. A little goes a long way and it smells nice”
Another agreed: “Smells good but is not overpowering, lathers up well for a good wash and rinses out nicely.”
One mentioned: “This shampoo is ok not too smelly made my doodle softer but didn’t help with tangles”, but others were thrilled writing: “Very nice smelling, good lather , happy it’s not full of toxins.”
Elsewhere, other odour-neutralising shampoos include Bugalugs Stinky Dog Shampoo , which is £9.55 for 500ml, and Christie’s Nature’s Specialties Smelly Pet Shampoo which comes in 473ml, 946ml and 3.8 litre bottles.
