There’s nothing better than finding a jacket that’s practical, pretty and a statement – but this £50 quilted printed jacket checked all the boxes – and got me so many compliments

Thanks to the dipping temperatures, it’s no surprise that autumn outfits are really all about the outerwear. A great coat or jacket is absolutely essential this time of year, and since it ends up covering up most of our outfit, it makes sense to make sure that’s one of the stand out items in your ensemble.

Although we’re heading into autumn we’ve still got plenty of unpredictable weather ahead, with warm and sunny spells meaning your fur-lined aviator or wool coat aren’t quite suitable. Thankfully, in my pursuit of the perfect transitional jacket, I stumbled across this £50 Printed Short Quilt Jacket from JD Williams – and it checks every box.

Practical? Check. Statement-making? Check. Versatile enough to fit into my wardrobe effortlessly? Check! And, of course, it’s perfectly on trend.

The quilted jacket has already been a great addition to my wardrobe, and has served me just as well for windy walks along the coast as it has as a lightweight going out jacket. It’s also super practical, made from a lightweight material that isn’t too warm or heavy when the sun comes out, but still gives you some protection from the cold or a fleeting rain shower.

It’s remarkably easy to style, and adds an instant cool factor to whatever I’m wearing, whether it’s jeans and trainers or some cowboy boots and a dress. It lands at just the right length to be flattering and cover my hips and stomach without drowning me, and its boxy shape gives it a laid-back, relaxed look that works for all occasions.

Plus, the Printed Short Quilt Jacket ’s oversized fit makes it great for layering, whether it’s a chunky knit, a hoodie or just a puff sleeve top underneath. The navy and white colourway is also easy to pair with any colour combination, so you don’t need to worry about clashing, and the abstract print is modern enough to look trendy whilst being timeless enough that you know it won’t look dated before you’ve even made it into winter.

It might be pegged as the perfect autumn jacket, but I could just as easily wear this in spring or summer too. Maybe even winter, with a thicker knit underneath and an extra layer! It also got me plenty of compliments from people who loved how pretty and chic it looked – which, lets face it is always a winner. It’s also available in sizes UK10 up to a UK32!

If you’re looking for something slightly more traditional, Nobody’s Child’s Floral Reversible Quilted Jacket , £125, has a similar boxy shape and rounded neckline, but comes in a classic black and pink floral print instead. It’s also fully reversible, with an all-over ditsy floral print on one side, and an understated minimalist flower pattern on the other.

Quilted jackets are having a big moment this autumn, and I’m so pleased I added the JD Williams Printed Short Quilt Jacket to my wardrobe – I’ll be wearing it on repeat.
