Amazon has cut hundreds off Google Pixel smartphones as reports suggest a new model could be coming soon

The Google Pixel smartphone range has plummeted in price with hundreds cut from Pixel 8 and 9 models. Amazon customers looking to upgrade can currently save 33% on the Google Pixel 8a as it drops to £334.99.

This marks a £164.01 discount from the usual £499 price of the 128GB model, with the 256GB edition coming in at £404.99. Amazon has also cut the price of the Google Pixel 9 to £635.96, down from £799.

The deals come as reports suggest Google may be about to announce another addition to its smartphone line-up, with a new model expected to be unveiled soon. The brand is keeping any details regarding a new release under wraps, but recent leaks suggest Google is getting ready to announce the Pixel 9a ‘imminently’, as TechRadar reports.

Official information is yet to be confirmed, but we’d expect the phone to be available from retailers including Amazon, Sky Mobile, EE and Mobiles.co.uk. When the Pixel 8a was announced last year, pre-orders were available from select retailers the same day, so Google fans may be able to order the new model soon.

If Google follows the same pattern as the Pixel 8a release, the Pixel 9a will be a more affordable version of the standard Pixel 9. The 8a hit the shelves in May last year and featured similar specifications to the regular model – including almost identical size and battery life – but for a cheaper price.

At launch, the 8a retailed for around £100 less than the 8, but actually excelled in some areas including a better quality camera, though some may find its plastic body feels less premium than the glass of the standard 8. The 8a also has a slightly lower water and dust resistance rating of IP68 compared to IP67.

Our tech and commerce editor, Harriet Morphy-Morris, has tested the Pixel 8a herself. She said the AI photo editing and camera qualities were so good that ‘she didn’t feel as though she needed to upgrade to the boosted Pixel 8 or Pixel 9 devices’. You can read the full review here: My Google Pixel 8a is so good I don’t need a Pixel 9 or Pixel 9 Pro.

But despite these differences, the Google Pixel 8a has achieved a 4.3-star rating after more than 1,000 Amazon reviews, while the Pixel 8 boasts a 4.2-star rating. One happy customer said of the 8a: “A great phone packed with features, very easy to learn, very intuitive. The battery life is great – I’m a phone addict and get a full day’s use out of it. The camera is great too. The speaker is a bit low compared to my last phone but I use earphones most of the time anyway. It’s very quick and smooth.”

Another said: “Amazing, an affordable Pixel phone, what more can you ask for? Battery lasts all day, system is fast and snappy with great cameras to meet the needs of most people. Packed full of AI features.”

A third buyer said: “It’s an amazing phone, probably the best I’ve had. I love everything about the phone its premium feel, the screen is clear and really bright. It has everything I need, the wallpapers and themes are really good. The camera is [really] good for a sub 600 [phone]. The battery life could be better, but I do like to play games and mess around on it.

However, the same user noted a downside, adding: “The only downside is the time it takes to charge – it’s got an 18w charge rate and there’s no charger or screen protector or case in the box so you have to buy these separately. You can charge it wirelessly but it’s only 15w charge which isn’t the best, but this wouldn’t put me off buying it again when the next model comes out. Google have really outdone themselves here.”
