Rishi Sunak’s pledge to take Personal Independence Payments away from people who have anxiety and depression if he wins the next election is vindictive and cruel
Tories are real frauds
Every time the Tories run into trouble they try to deflect attention from their miserable failings by bashing benefits.
PM Rishi Sunak’s language yesterday may have sounded soothing but the policies he touted were vindictive and cruel. Some of the most vulnerable in society could be left worse off as a result of his plans.
He wants people with mental health problems to be denied Personal Independence Payments and offered NHS treatment instead. There was no explanation of how he intends to achieve this given there are 1.9 million on the mental health waiting list in England. The PM also insinuated that many claimants were either idlers or fraudsters when there is little evidence to support this lazy canard.
The real fraud he should be concerned about is the billions his Government wasted on dodgy Covid contracts and schemes. The Tories never change. Rather than taking responsibility for their own incompetence they would rather demonise the poor and the sick.
Time to stop
Israel has ignored calls from its allies to show restraint by launching a missile attack on Iran. Although the retaliation was not as aggressive as feared, it marks another turn of the screw towards a wider Middle Eastern conflict.
President Biden had urged Israel to “take the win” after the Jewish state shot down 99% of the drones and missiles Iran launched at it. Britain made a similar appeal following last Saturday’s provocative attack.
Having now sated his thirst for revenge, Benjamin Netanyahu should listen to his few remaining international supporters. Having already risked sparking a regional conflict, any further action would be recklessness verging on madness.
Gone to pot
Inflation has driven the price of tea through the roof. When people struggle to afford their daily cuppas you know that trouble is brewing.
