Horror moment tourist dies from jumping off Spitting Cave cliff in Hawaii
A teacher has died after jumping from a dangerous cliff and falling 50ft while on holiday in Hawaii.
The distressing footage shows Argentinian Rugby player and fitness instructor, Santiago Bourdieu, running up to the edge of Spitting Cliff on the American island of Oahu near Honolulu on the afternoon of Saturday, February 8, and jumping into the water below.
Mr Bourdieu, who was on holiday, appears to land at a bad angle after the 50ft jump and does not resurface.
One of his friends reportedly tried looking for him in the water but could not locate him. His friends appear distraught as the footage cuts to lifeguards from the Honolulu Department of Ocean Safety, heading down to the water and looking for him before they locate him in the water. It took them around 15 minutes to find the tourist in the choppy water.
Mr Bourdieu, who works as a physical education teacher at St Nicholas’ School in Olivos, in Buenos Aires, was transported to Maunalua Bay, where rescuers performed CPR on him. He reportedly responded to CPR and was taken to a hospital, but he later died.
The 28 year old also played rugby at the San Isidro Club until last year, when he became a physical trainer. The club said following his death: “We share great affection [with] all the family and friends of Santi in this moment. Santi was a player of the 96 generation and also collaborated as a PF in our youth divisions. He will be missed.”
The Buenos Aires Rugby Union added: “The Board of Directors of URBA expresses its condolences for the death of the former player and current PF of the SIC senior team, Santiago Bourdieu, and accompanies his family, his friends and the club in this moment of sadness.”
The Spitting Cave is one of the island’s most visited tourist attractions. Its name derives from the waves crashing into it, with the cave then “spitting out” the water.
