Travel gurus from Which? have dished out some top travel tips that could help save you a few quid on your next holiday. Planning a trip often feels like an endless stream of cash flowing out of your account but there are ways to curb the spending.

The savvy advisors made a TikTok video highlighting how simple changes in the way you book flights and hotels could keep more money in your pocket. They’ve spilled the beans: switching up the device you use for bookings might be a game-changer, reports the Express.

As the experts noted: “If you’re using booking sites like, say, Booking.com always check the price on your mobile rather than a laptop because often they offer unique discounts for booking this way. It can be like 20 percent off or something like that.”

But that’s not all. For extra savings, going old school and contacting airlines or accommodation providers directly comes highly recommended by Which?. The experts reveal: “But it is also always worth contacting the hotel direct to see if they can beat the best price you found. Even if they can’t, often they will throw in a perk such as a free room upgrade or maybe breakfast.”

During Which’s second annual Shoddy Awards last summer, these pros didn’t mince their words about various sites and operators notorious for sneaking in hidden charges, leaving customers to fork out more than planned. While you might be lured in by travel websites flaunting seemingly unbeatable rates, consumers often contend with a barrage of hidden charges down the line.

When it comes to checking out, travellers can expect “hefty fees for baggage”, a premium for picking seats, and even sneaky sign-ups to memberships “you didn’t know you asked for”. To ensure a cost-effective journey, Which? travel advises booking directly with the airline.

They pointed out: “A word of advice: always book flights directly with the airline. Even the very best of the online travel agents are just an unnecessary middleman that makes your holiday harder.”

Which? also suggests bypassing on-the-spot train ticket purchases at stations if you’re zipping across the UK. The smart move is to secure tickets online well beforehand.

Additionally, procrastinating on flight bookings could hit your wallet hard. Which? recommends: “Set up a price alert two to six months in advance with Skyscanner or Google Alerts, and then you can book your flight when the price drops.”
