“We extend our deepest condolences to Sommie’s parents, siblings, extended family, friends and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” the statement adds.

A tribute website has been set up for Somtochukwu, where those who knew her or loved her work are sharing their memories and condolences.

The description on the page says: “Sommie, as she was fondly known by loved ones, was a phenomenal person. First and foremost she was God fearing. A daughter, sister, friend, pageant queen, lawyer, journalist and so much more.

“But most of all, she was selfless. She was a staunch advocate for women and girls, gender based violence, education reform, and social justice.

“Sommie’s legacy will live on in all of us. We will carry you with us always, your smile, your voice, your spirit, your light. “We pray that your memory will serve as a reminder of the impact that one person can have when they dedicate their life to creating positive change. We love you Sommie but God loves you more. Rest peacefully in His arms, sister, until we meet again.”

One emotional tribute reads: “Thank you for being my friend. For letting me experience your light, your warmth and kind heart. I miss you so deeply and it hurts more than words can say, that you are not here with us anymore. But I take solace in knowing that God knows best. Keep shining Sommie, until we meet again.”

Another says: “I can’t believe I’m writing this… Sommie, you were light, laughter, and such a genuine soul. To think that your life was cut short this way is unbearable. Thank you for the memories, the love, and the joy you brought into our lives. You deserved so much more time.

“Sommie was my very first guest on my podcast, so sweet, kind, and incredibly intelligent. She loved speaking about women taking up space and advocating for more women in Nigeria’s politics.

“I truly admired her tenacity and her courage to return to Nigeria and speak out for what she believed in. It breaks my heart that Nigeria happened to this sweet girl. I hope you’re resting with the angels now, madam President.”
