Teachers are given a position of trust, guiding children through the early stages of their lives and teaching them the foundation of life. But teachers from all over the nation have been caught grossly violating their positions as they committed heinous sex crimes against their own students.

Some of those who misused their students trust has been jailed for grooming before engaging in physical relationships with them. As a result some of the victims have been left deeply traumatised by their experiences.

Teaching Regulation Agency panels have also prohibited some of the offenders from ever returning to classrooms across the country. Here we look at some of the disgraced teachers who abused their positions and had sexual relations with current and former students, the Birmingham Mail reports.

Darryll Prew

A disgraced former teacher has been banned from the profession for life after having sex with a pupil and locking her half-naked in the cupboard. Paedophile Darryll Prew was found guilty of ‘unacceptable professional conduct’ by a teaching misconduct panel last week after admitting to various sexual offences against the child.

The 54-year-old was employed at Queen Mary’s Grammar School in Walsall when allegations of sexual misconduct were made against him about crimes relating to a different school (School A). During his time working at School A from 1994-2001, Prew abused his position of trust by having ‘sexual intercourse with a child.’

The then-married teacher even claimed his vile behaviour was just ‘what all men do’ after a cleaner stumbled upon the pair at school. In November 2021, Prew resigned from his role following allegations of sexual misconduct during his time at a different school in 2001.

Lloyd Ellis

An outdoor education teacher convicted of sexual activity with a student has been permanently banned from the teaching profession. Lloyd Ellis, who taught at Abbotsholme School in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, from 2018 until August 2021, faced a professional conduct panel over his actions.

In 2023, he received a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, at Stafford Crown Court. The hearing concluded that Ellis “fell significantly short of the standards expected of the profession.”

Rebecca Joynes

Teacher Rebecca Joynes, 30, has been jailed at Manchester Crown Court for six-and-a-half years after being sentenced for six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child. Joynes 30, was found guilty by a jury at Manchester Crown Court in May of six sex offences following a two-week trial.

Joynes had groomed the pupils from the age of 15 and was on bail for sexual activity with the first, Boy A, when she began having sex with the second, Boy B, by whom she went on to become pregnant. Neither boy can be identified.

Neil Foden

An ‘arrogant’ headteacher who carried out vile sex attacks against four young girls faces a long stretch behind bars. ‘Controlling’ former teacher Neil Foden was convicted of 19 sex crimes against children.

The 66-year-old was cleared of one charge by jurors following a trial. A court heard how the paedophile abused his young victims over a four-year period.

He told one child he loved her and called another ‘his little sex toy’. He was jailed for 17 years.

Steven Bould

Maths teacher Steven Bould is guilty of sexually touching young schoolgirls. Two of the offences took place at Nether Stowe School, in Lichfield, while a further seven occurred at The Pingle Academy, Swadlincote.

He was dismissed in 2019 after concerns were raised over his conduct. He was ‘previously subject to warnings in respect of his teaching practice and failure to maintain appropriate personal space with pupils’.

Bould, then residing in Heath Hayes, Cannock, confessed to nine charges of intentionally sexually touching underage girls. He was imprisoned for 33 months following a hearing at Stafford Crown Court.

The defendant, in his 30s, was indefinitely banned from teaching by the Teaching Regulation Agency and ordered by the court to sign the sex offenders’ register for ten years.

Muhammad Taimoor

Secondary school teacher Muhammad Taimoor was found guilty of sexually assaulting three girls. He lured the schoolgirls, all 16 years old, by offering them the opportunity to skip lessons and spend time with him in his classroom at an unnamed Birmingham school.

Taimoor, who is in his 30s, also allowed the girls to use their mobile phones and vapes, and gifted them chocolates and doughnuts.

The court heard how he used a Snapchat group to engage in sexual communication with his victims. Taimoor, formerly of Richmond Road, Yardley, was apprehended when the girls confided in another teacher.

He has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Robin Kyne

Married drama teacher Robin Kyne has been permanently barred from teaching following his sexual relationship with a former student. A Teaching Regulation Agency panel heard that Mr Kyne, in his 50s, was employed at Regent College in Leicestershire at the time.

He later became assistant headteacher before working for Leicester City Council. The inappropriate behaviour reportedly began during drama lessons and escalated into a physical relationship.

Mr Kyne obtained the student’s contact details under the pretence of discussing homework.

The panel concluded that Mr Kyne was guilty of misconduct and he has been indefinitely banned from teaching.

Darrell Prew

Married man and churchgoer, Darrell Prew, was found guilty of having sexual relations with a schoolgirl in fields and keeping her half-naked in a cupboard while other children were in the classroom. The victim was groomed by Prew who told her to keep quiet about the abuse.

Prew’s wife was pregnant when he began communicating with his victim, who was 15 at the time the abuse started in the early 2000s. They used a special book to exchange messages, and Prew also gifted her a tape of love songs for her birthday.

The court heard that they had sex multiple times. Prew, who worked in the Black Country, was only brought to justice two decades after he committed his crimes.

Prew, formerly of Sandwell Street, Walsall, admitted five counts of abuse position of trust under the sex offences act and was jailed for 28 months.

Ian Featherstone

Dad-of-two Ian Featherstone, a private school teacher, groomed a student on social media before having sex with them. He started exchanging intimate pictures before a physical relationship developed.

Featherstone did not use protection during the illegal activity with the victim, who was later diagnosed with autism.

The defendant, who worked at Abbotsholme School, near Ashbourne, tried to cover his tracks by telling his victim not to store his contact details on her phone. Featherstone, in his 40s, admitted two counts of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust.

He was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years, along with other court orders.

Steven Laverty

PE teacher Steven Laverty engaged in sexual activity with a former student and then instructed her to lie about his age. The court heard how he had sex with his victim after she left the school where he taught.

The sex offender, who is in his 40s, lied about her being 16 at the time. As a result, it was reported that the victim began self-harming.

Laverty, a father formerly of Stuart Road in Walton, Liverpool, was found guilty of one count of sexual activity with a child by a jury. He had previously been prohibited from teaching for 10 years.

He was sentenced to three years in prison and ordered to sign the sex offenders register for life.

Kandice Barber

Teacher Kandice Barber had sex in a field with a 15-year-old student. She added herself to the boy’s Snapchat account and their messages became sexual within a week.

The paedophile also sent a topless picture of herself, along with a video of her performing a sex act. She became ‘determined to silence him’ by instructing him to delete all messages and block her on the app.

Barber, from Buckinghamshire, was found guilty of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity back in 2021. She was sentenced to six years and two months in prison.

She is currently working as a gate guard while on temporary release from prison.
