A hair care expert has shared an easy trick that’ll keep you from suffering from a bad haircut ever again. Amy Chang, who is known on social media as @bondenavant, has revealed how to know whether you suit short or long hair best – and all you need is two pencils to figure it out.

In a TikTok video, she is seen holding one pencil downwards against the bottom of her ear while the other rests under her chin outwards. She says: “You measure the distances between (where the pencils meet). If it’s shorter than two and a quarter inches then short hair will look good on you.”

Trying out the hack themselves, user Liz Seibert duetted the video to share whether or not it works.

She says she has received compliments with both long and short hair – but doesn’t know which one suits her best.

But much to her surprise, her measurement is exactly two and a quarter inches, meaning she a rock both looks.

Commenting on her video, one user said: “I know an easier way, cut your hair and if it looks bad, just cry about it.”

While another added: “I think it means you’ll look good in both.”

A third user chimed in: “Mine is about three inches and I get the most compliments with shorter hair.”

While a fourth wrote: “I won’t measure this to cut my hair. If I want to, I do it and that’s it.”

Seconding this method, a statement on Rush Hair and Beauty reads: “We’ve all been there at least once in our lifetime…got a short hairstyle and absolutely hated it!

“But don’t let that put a bad taste in your mouth, you’re probably not used to seeing yourself with short hair, and you’ve probably chosen a haircut that doesn’t suit your face!

“However, there’s any easy method to see if you could suit short hair – the 2.25 rule!

“The rule states that if the longest part of your chin is less than 2.5 inches from the tip of your ear lobe, then you’re in luck – you suit short hairstyles!”

However, they say there’s certain things to consider before going in for the chop including your lifestyle, hairstyle maintenance, personal style as well as your face shape.

Those with a round face could best suit a pixie cut whereas people with oval faces could benefit from a layered bob.

When it comes to those with a square face shape, a shoulder-length cut could help soften their face, while a wispy layered haircut could work best for those with heart face shapes.

Finally, those with a diamond face shape could transform their appearance with a sharp bob, allowing them to exclude elegance with the stylish cut.
