Broadband users are being urged to check their Wi-Fi routers and download an urgent update.

There’s a worrying alert that’s just been announced and it’s a good idea to check your Wi-Fi router without delay. The warning has been issued by the team at NETGEAR after the discovery of two ‘critical’ bugs that could allow cyber crooks to access things remotely. Although it’s not been confirmed what data or user interactions could be targeted in an attack, NETGEAR doesn’t want users to wait to find out.

In a post on its website, the broadband firm said, “NETGEAR has released fixes for an unauthenticated RCE security vulnerability. “NETGEAR strongly recommends that you download the latest firmware as soon as possible.”

Affected routers include the firm’s popular XR1000 model along with the XR1000v2 and XR500.

If you use a NETGEAR device to beam the web around your home, it’s a good idea to check what model number it is update the software as soon as possible.

To download the latest firmware for your NETGEAR product:

• Visit NETGEAR Support.

• Start typing your model number in the search box, then select your model from the drop-down menu as soon as it appears.

• If you do not see a drop-down menu, make sure that you entered your model number correctly, or select a product category to browse for your product model.

• Click Downloads.

Under Current Versions, select the download whose title begins with Firmware Version.

• Click Download.

• Follow the instructions in your product’s user manual, firmware release notes, or product support page to install the new firmware.
